Celebrity dad Jesse Tyler Ferguson opened up recently about all things baby Beckett in an interview with Ellen DeGeneres. The Modern Family alum gushed about his son’s “sweet” personality and said that although his little one is only 8-months-old, he already has a favorite book.
The actor, like any new parent, is getting acquainted with his son’s personality in the most adorable ways. One TBD factor of the little guy’s personality, in Ferguson’s eyes, is his son’s sexual orientation.

“It’s a new person in your life and just like anyone else … you’ve gotta figure out if you like him,” Jesse Tyler Ferguson explained to Ellen of his little boy’s character. “It takes a little bit of time. I really do like him. It’s been a lot of fun.”
Ferguson and his husband Justin Mikita who have been together since 2013 decided to hold off on having a baby right after they got married. The actor said that he’s wanted to be a dad “for a long time” but said he was waiting on Mikita, who is ten years his junior, to warm to the idea. “I was like, ‘You let me know when you’re ready. But I was ready yesterday,’” Ferguson told Ellen.
Since baby Beckett’s arrival in July of 2020, Ferguson said he’s been singing his son “a lot of showtunes” and reading him colorful children’s books like The Hips on the Drag Queen Go Swish, Swish, Swish written by Lil Miss Hot Mess and illustrated by Olga de Dios.
“We’re raising him gay until he decides he’s straight,” the actor said during the Ellen DeGeneres Show interview. “On the way back from the hospital, we played Britney Spears because that was what Justin demanded we listen to, his first exposure to music.”
Ferguson said that he and Mikita will “absolutely” love his son if he is straight. “Justin and I were saying, we can just tell he’s gonna be such a straight kid,” he shared. “Who knows? He can do whatever he wants. I have a feeling he’s gonna wanna play football. I can just tell. I’m gonna have to learn how to do all those things.”
Until that happens, the pair are concentrating on “stuffing [Beckett’s] little sausage legs” into the “nicest baby clothes” that Taylor Swift apparently sent them. When the singer was unable to attend their baby shower, she sent cashmere jumpsuits and more to little Beckett. “I’m like, ‘This is what Taylor Swift got you, so you’re just gonna have to learn to enjoy this,’” Ferguson quipped of making the clothes fit as Beckett continues to grow.
The two fledgling dads welcomed their baby in July of 2020 just six months after they announced that they would be starting a family together. Prior to these latest comments about Beckett’s personality, Ferguson had also opened up about the ways that fatherhood surprised him.
“I’m surprised at how unaffected I am when he vomits on me,” Ferguson, 45, told People in a recent interview.

“If I saw that happening to someone else, I would probably get the dry heaves, but when he does it on me, it’s fine,” he continued. “He’s urinated on me and I’m not bothered by it. That’s probably the most surprising thing!”
Aside from joking about the very unattractive realities of parenting a newborn, Ferguson also said that the pandemic has offered him a lot of time to bond with his son.
“I had just finished Modern Family, which I had done for 11 years, and we knew Beckett was coming in July,” said Ferguson, who filmed the Emmy-winning show’s finale last February.
“There was this forced opportunity to stop and relax and be in the moment,” Ferguson continued. “I was able to really focus on Beckett coming into our lives.”

“It’s astonishing,” the actor said. “I can be in a bad mood and seeing him super excited, kicking and smiling, it just immediately lifts my spirits. It’s so pure and sweet. And it gives me so much joy.”
Who else can relate? We are so happy to read that these two dads are raising their child with open minds and hearts. What baby wouldn’t want to be “raised gay” by these two doting dads?
