If you’ve watched Season 1 of The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives, released on Sept. 6, then you’re probably wondering how Jen and Zac Affleck are doing after their massive argument.
Many fans wandered if their marriage was falling apart after Jen and her friends were spotted at a Chippendales show in Las Vegas. Jen eventually left the show, but not before sparking a fight with Zac.
In a recent interview with TODAY.com, the 25-year-old mother of two opened up about her marriage and how the Chippendales fight ended up “strengthening” their relationship, despite what others might think.
“I think what was wrong about the situation was that he just didn’t trust me, and he didn’t trust that I could navigate the situation,” she said, adding that Zac’s anger was more aimed at the ‘context of the situation.’
She said it would’ve been different if they were at a bachelorette party and celebrating, but Zac was more angry because they were “representing our church” and millions of viewers around the world would see it.
“[He was] scared that they would put me in a tough situation with filming, and that they would portray me in a different light that I’m not,” she said. “At the end of the day, it doesn’t matter what other people think.”
The Chippendales fight that almost broke them
One of the more dramatic and controversial moments of the first season happened during the 6th season of the show, when Jen and her friends took a wild trip to Las Vegas that included an appearance at a Chippendales show.
While her friends enjoyed themselves, interacting with the Chippendales dancers, Jen appeared uncomfortable and thought the show was “crossing the line” by being there.
At one point, Jen called her husband as she contemplates staying or leaving the show, which sparked a massive argument between the two because Zac didn’t know Jen was at the show.
“Can you just stop for a second and think of me and a person, and my character?” Jen says while on the phone with Zac. “I’m a human being and I did nothing wrong in the situation.”
Jen says Zac didn’t want to be married to her
After they hung up, Jen told one of her friends that Zac “didn’t want to be married to her.” Viewers also zoomed in on a text message exchange between Zac and Jen that adds more depth to the argument.
“Seriously, I don’t want to hear one more thing about your heart. Start taking accountability for your actions and for the situations you put yourself in. You’re a grown woman,” the text appears to read.
“It doesn’t matter your intentions. You were there, and that’s the image you portray of yourself, your family, church etc.”
Despite the drama, Jen says the fight ‘strengthened’ her marriage
Shortly after the series premiered, Jen mentioned in a TikTok video how “rough” the first season was for both her and her husband. She didn’t go into detail as to why, but she opened up in interviews.
“I definitely think that we both learned so much and we both saw where we went wrong,” she said in an interview with Decider earlier this month, adding that “no marriage is perfect,” and that includes hers.
Nonetheless, Jen and Zac Affleck are still together, and the Chippendales fight actually “strengthened” their marriage.
“There are a lot of times where I’m going to fall short and he’s going to have to pick up the rest of the pieces and there are moments where he’s going to fall short and I’m going to have to pick up those pieces. And it was definitely one of those moments for me,” Jen said to Decider.
Jen and Zac Affleck attend couples therapy regularly
In another interview with Vulture, Jen discussed how she and Zac have attended couples therapy regularly since filming ended, and how it helped them “set so many boundaries moving forward.”
“If we continue in our relationship, there are changes that need to be made. If they’re not made, we might have to… look at other options. But as of right now, I do think he’s trying his best to make those changes,” she added.
