After video footage and photos of slain rapper, Goonew, went viral his family speaks out about their decision to display his corpse at a DC nightclub for his home-going funeral.
“We wanted to give him a party. We didn’t want to give him a funeral,” Patrice Marrow, Goonew’s mother, explained to TMZ.

“My son loves to have fun,” Patrice explained. “He was the life of the party. So, that’s why I sent him home that way.”
In addition to Goonew’s mother, his sister, Ariana also responded saying that her mother told the funeral director that she did not want a funeral and instead wanted the celebration to be treated like his “last show.”

Goonew’s family also shared that it was the funeral director’s idea to prop him up and to put a crown on the corpse because he was “the King of Maryland.”
“He had fans who love him,” Patricia said of the event. “You had to be there. It was a beautiful celebration.”
Ariana explained further that her brother didn’t go to church and that it would be “fake” to have a somber funeral in one. She felt it would have been disingenuous to dress Goonew in a suit, put him in a casket, and play gospel music.
“My brother told me he did not want to be in a suit,” she said. “Exactly what he had one and was wearing was what he wanted.”

“We lived and partied for him on that day exactly how he wanted,” Ariana also shared.
The comments from the late 24-year-old rapper come following controversy after a video was shared on social media of Goonew’s body being displayed, propped up, in a crown at a nightclub party.
The celebration of life was dubbed “The Final Show,” and was held at Bliss Nightclub in Washington DC on Sunday.
The home-going celebration comes two weeks after Goonew, whose legal name is Markelle Morrow, was shot to death in a District Heights parking lot. His family believes that he was the victim of an armed robbery, TMZ reports.
While the footage from the celebration might be shocking to outsiders, it seems like the celebration was exactly as his family wanted. Although unconventional, the home-going party appears to have been satisfactory for Patrice and Ariana. We hope the rapper’s “final show” brought some closure for them.
