Fitting in can be tricky, especially at a young age when you’re still learning how to navigate the sometimes-challenging social scene. Luckily, with some creativity, you can often overcome those challenges and come out on top. Such was the case with then-seven-year-old Gianessa Wride, who totally rocked a “crazy hair day” at school a few years ago.
Gianessa has alopecia, an autoimmune disease that caused her hair and eyebrows to fall out. In 2017, Gianessa’s mom, Daniella, spoke with People about how she and her daughter dealt with the dramatic change.

“It was upsetting to her, and it was hard for me as well, but not because of what she looks like. I was more upset thinking that somebody might bully my daughter and I didn’t want her to ever feel less than beautiful than she is,” Daniella told the magazine.
So, when “crazy hair day,” came up, Daniella knew she wanted to do something special for Gianessa. She made a beautiful design in jewels that she applied to Gianessa’s head, including flowers and a jewel-toned owl.
The designs went over so well that Gianessa won first place in the school’s contest!
