Actor Tom Hanks has starred in some of the world’s most beloved movies. From Polar Express to Forest Gump to Saving Private Ryan and Big, Hanks is one of the most familiar faces in Hollywood.

And that is exactly why he was chosen to receive the Cecil B. DeMille Award at the Golden Globes on January 5. However, after accepting the prestigious award, talk switched from Hanks receiving the honor to the raw emotion he shared while accepting it.

Just as he was about to begin his speech, Hanks got choked up, so choked up that he had to take a minute to collect himself. After announcing that he was getting over a cold, Hanks looked down at his wife and five children, who were sitting at a table in the front row. Watch the moment for yourself:

With tears in his eyes, the actor said, “A man is…I’m sorry…a man is blessed with a family sitting down front like that. A wife who is fantastic in every way, who has taught me what love is. Five kids who are braver and stronger and wiser than their old man is. And [they] are a loving group of people who have put up with me being away months and months and months at a time. Of course, otherwise, I wouldn’t be standing here if they wouldn’t have put up with that.”

The actor then became emotional again at the end of his speech. While explaining the old Hollywood term “check the gate,” Hanks had to take a minute to collect himself, telling the audience that he’s never really this emotional and blamed it on the cold.

He concluded, “Well guys, I have checked the gate, and the gate his good. Thank you.” How sweet?
