Unique Clay‘s family wants answers after she died shortly after giving birth to her third child. On April 30, the Chicago woman went into labor and welcomed her third little one into the world at 31 years old.
However, just days after becoming a mom for the third time, Clay collapsed and died. Her cause of death is now believed to be due to COVID-19. According to NBC 5, Clay’s sudden passing has rocked her family and now they want answers.
“All I need is answers,” her mom, Annette Clay, told NBC 5 before questioning the hospital’s actions. “Why would they send my baby home to die with her kids?”
Just before giving birth, Clay tested positive for COVID-19. Now her family wants answers.
After giving birth on April 30, she and her baby were discharged from the hospital on May 3. As NBC 5 reports, on May 5, her 11-year-old daughter discovered her mom unconscious in her bedroom.
Annette said she learned about her daughter’s death from her 11-year-old granddaughter. “She called me back and told me my daughter was dead. I couldn’t believe it.”
Because Clay died of a coronavirus-related infection, the Cook County medical examiner’s office ruled her death natural. Clay was a letter carrier for her region of Chicago. While 30 of her colleagues in the area contract the virus, Clay is the first to pass away as a result, the National Association of Letter Carriers told NBC 5.
The night before Mother’s day, Clay’s friends and family released balloons into the sky in honor of her life. Clay would have been 32 on June 9. Now her parents want to know why the hospital would release her from their care.
In a statement released by the University of Chicago Medicine, it read that “The University of Chicago Medicine community extends the deepest sympathy to the family.” However, due to privacy laws, the hospital refused to comment on their decision to send Clay home.
While talking to NBC 5 on May 9, Clay’s father, Alan Brown said, “One month from today will be her birthday. No parent should be picking out caskets.”
