Drew Barrymore wants her kids to be, well, just kids.
“I want them to be kids,” Drew said of her children, 9-year-old Olive and 7-year-old Frankie, in a recent appearance on Dax Shepard and Monica Padman‘s Armchair Expert podcast.
Drew, who is currently hosting the second season of The Drew Barrymore Show, revealed that her intention for Olive and Frankie to have more traditional childhood experiences is why they don’t pop on her social media or talk show.
She’s very protective of them: “I don’t put my kids on social media. I’m like a f****** Doberman about them,” Drew said.
Drew mentioned the infamous Steven Spielberg, who produced and directed E.T., for being a father figure to her while working on the film as well as inspiring some of the parenting techniques she uses.

“They watch TikTok. They love social media,” she continued. “They get in a bad mood when they realize they won’t be put on camera, but they know good goddamn well why, because I’m like, ‘I want you to be kids!'”
In June, the star was featured on Demi Lovato‘s podcast, 4D With Demi Lovato, and spoke on how her relationship with her own mother influenced her parenting style today.
Drew revealed how her own mother, Jaid, were friends, not “parent and child” growing up, which forced her to “completely relearn what parent-child dynamic is.”
“I’m having amazing real realizations about my own kids and how little I understood what boundaries were,” Drew shared.
“I didn’t have them growing up and when you’re a parent, you try to compensate with so much love and you’re almost afraid to get into the argument sometimes, you’re just trying to survive the day, so you let things slide and you’re like, ‘Oh, there should have been a boundary in that place probably a while ago but I guess I’m only realizing that now.’”
Drew leaned into the importance of boundaries — revealing she had previously told her daughters, Frankie, 7, and Olive, 8½, that she will “never be their friend.”
“Like, I’m your parent, I’m not your friend,” she explained, adding, “You can be friendly and do activities, it’s not that it has to be this strict relationship.”
