Derek Hough and Hayley Erbert might not have any children running around the house yet, but there’s a good chance that changes in the near future.
The 39-year-old dancer hinted at the possibility in a recent interview with E! News, revealing that the couple have talked about it and it’s certainly something they “eventually” want.
“We definitely want to have a family eventually,” Hough said. “We’ll see what’s in the cards, what’s on the horizon. Little dancing children running around.”
The couple met in 2014 when Erbert performed on his and sister Julianne Hough’s Move Live Tour , eventually becoming castmates on Dancing With the Stars the following year. Their romance began in July 2015.
They managed to keep the relationship relatively private for several years, but went Instagram official in 2017 and dated for another five years before announcing their engagement on June 2, 2022.
The special day came on Aug. 26, 2023 in Monterey County, California. And they picked the perfect spot.
“We got married right in front of this mother tree that’s surrounded by all these smaller trees,” Erbert said to PEOPLE last year. “They drop all the seeds, and it plants kind of like an army of children to protect the mother. The symbolism of it was beautiful. We’re here, planting our seeds to grow our family.”
Now more than two years later, it appears that symbolism might become a reality soon.
Hayley and Derek celebrate one year wedding anniversary
On Aug. 28, Erbert took to Instagram to celebrate her one year wedding anniversary with her husband, who she described as “the most beautiful human” she knows.
“We’ve seen the highest highs and faced the lowest lows, but I’ve never been more certain that I made the best decision of my life a year ago, committing to you in this lifetime,” she wrote in the caption.
The couple had quite a horrific and difficult year, which Erbert was referencing in the caption.
In Dec. 2023, just a few months after their wedding day, Erbert was hospitalized for a cranial hematoma. She underwent an emergency craniectomy before beginning on the road to recovery.
“She’s a miracle,” Hough said of his wife. “She really is and I don’t say that lightly.”
The two decided to celebrate their anniversary by visiting the same cliffside in Carmel where they got married one year prior. And it was by that same mother tree that they read their vows to each other, yet again.
“It was really emotional because we were reading the vows and thinking like, ‘Wow, we really put these to the test,’” Hough told E! News.
Erbert will join Hough on ‘Dance for the Holidays’ Tour
For those who are hoping to see more of Derek and Hayley on the dance floor, you won’t have to wait long. The couple will be performing together later this year when Hayley joins Derek on his dance tour.
The 38-city Dance for the Holidays tour will commence on Nov. 1 in Atlantic City, NJ and conclude on Dec. 29 with a two night show in Mesa, AZ.
“To perform with her during the season of miracles, it’s special,” he added. “We’re excited to go on tour and to share the joy and the love and just the spirit of the holidays with everybody.”
For now, the couple is going to enjoy the time they have with one another at home, where they enjoy binge-watching their favorite true crime dramas and eating some of their favorite snacks.
