Advice Summary
The community offered this mom in need a lot of great advice. Read some of their responses below.
“Go to the health store or order on-line Nettles Tea. Its called the stinging tea though it doesn’t hurt your child’s scalp. Boil some of the loose tea in water. Strain leaves out and pour on your daughter’s scalp after it cools down of course. Massage in and let sit for a few minutes. You shouldn’t have to re-shampoo unless she contracts them again. It kills adults and their eggs. I stored the leftover tea in my fridge when my kids were younger. Good luck.”
“Listerine.”
“When my daughter got them when she was young (from school(, we used Nix.”
“Tea tree oil. I suffered badly with lice. My mum, granny, grandma, and nanny all tried everything and I still got them. When I was in year 5, Mum’s friend who was a hairdresser told her about tea tree she bought around tea tree shampoo and conditioner and oil for my hair and never had them again.”
“Go to a lice clinic. It’s the only guaranteed way to get rid of them.”
“Mayo!”
“After using rid, we saturated our kids’ hair with conditioner to comb them out. They slide right out with the comb, nits and all.”
“Use a lice-removing shampoo and pick out all nits. You’re going to have to pick every day 2x a day.”
“Cetaphil!! Wash her hair, NO conditioner, while the hair is damp spread the Cetaphil all throughout her hair and really in her scalp. Then blow-dry her hair. It is a pain and takes a while but it is the only thing that worked on my two girls with thick hair. My youngest was 2 and I sat her in front of a movie while I dried it. Leave that in overnight, wash it out (again no conditioner) and repeat. It completely smothers the living lice so you have to repeat for a few days till the eggs hatch and you smother them too.”
“Please don’t do these tall tail myths. Go to the store and buy the actual lice products. There’s shampoo, hair spray, you’ll need spray for your house too, there’s some that sit in the hair and give you the tiny comb you need to comb them out. Even if coke or a hair straightener might work, it also might not completely. And would you rather waste your time with something that might not work, or just get it done and keep it gone.”
