DIY Instagrammer Jessica of @cottagefarmhouse just blew everyone’s minds when she posted pictures of her brother Jeremy’s extremely frugal wedding. The showstopper was the gorgeous wedding cake — a four-layer extravaganza that cost the couple a total of just $50.
That’s right: $50. Jeremy and his now-wife, Gosia, didn’t have a lot of money to spend, so instead of shelling out hundreds of dollars for their wedding cake, they made one themselves, along with the help of his sister Jessica and a relative who is a pastry chef.

The foundation of the cake is two sheet cakes from everybody’s favorite big box store: Costco. They then trimed the cakes and molded them into tiers creating a gorgeous wedding cake for under $50.
After refrosting the cakes to create a smooth finish, they covered them with $10 worth of flowers from Trader Joe’s.
The stunning result looks like they spent way more than $50! You gotta love Costco and Trader Joe’s!
Sure, the wedding dress is a pretty big deal, but the biggest centerpiece of a wedding is probably the wedding cake. It’s the first thing guests look for when they enter the reception area, so it better be good.
Because wedding cakes are so important, they also tend to be very pricey. You can spend upward of a thousand bucks to get a professionally made wedding cake.
But if you or your friends have DIY skills, you can save a bundle — as Jeremey and Gosia showed with their gorgeous four-tiered wedding cake for only $50.
“It is no secret my bother is frugal…but this wedding took frugality to a whole new level,” Jessica wrote on her Instagram.
With the help of Costco, Trader Joe’s, Hobby Lobby, and a relative who’s a pastry chef, the bride and groom crafted a last-minute and extremely affordable cake.
“They bought two @costco cakes, cut them, stacked them, re-iced with buttercream icing, and covered with $10 @traderjoes flowers,” Jessica wrote.
Jessica contributed the cake stand — also a DIY project.
“Displayed on the stand I built using stuff from @hobbylobby… beautiful on a budget!” she said.
The final result was amazing.
You’d never think for a minute that this was a Costco cake, right? And that it was “thrown together” the day before the wedding? Jessica claims the whole thing took a couple of hours.
Fans on Instagram flooded the post with lots of awe and praise. How could you not be impressed? Jessica said she would write a tutorial for how they constructed this cake.
In a follow-up post, she explained: “My brother and my whole family are very hands on DIY and save money wherever we can.”
Because Jeremy and Gosia love to travel, they wanted to save money and use the bulk of their budget to spend on their honeymoon rather than on the wedding itself.
“Their flower budget was zero,” Jessica explained. “Their cake budget was ‘let’s make cupcakes and freeze for the wedding’.”
But two weeks before the wedding, they changed their minds. They asked Jessica to help them as their wedding coordinator, and she came up with something better using her fab DIY skills.
She explained: “I was able to talk my brother into just getting Costco cakes and throwing some real flowers on it.” They ordered two of the $18.99 sheet cakes with cream cheese filling and picked them up on the way to the venue before the rehearsal dinner.
She continued: “With the help of Gosia’s brother-in-law, Jamie Warley ( who happens to be a chef in England), the cakes were cut into tiered squares, stacked, re-iced, and arranged a few of the real flowers from the piles of flowers used for decorating (about $10 worth).”
They saved money on the music, too.
“Oh and should I mention they did not hire a DJ and used Spotify on an iPad for the music for dancing?” she wrote. “It really was a beautiful reception on a budget!”
Stay tuned for when Jessica posts her cake tutorial. We can think of dozens of occasions to use this DIY cake template — birthdays, baby showers, holidays, you name it!
