Update: Almost one year after Christina Applegate admitted that her last awards show would be the SAG Awards in February 2023, she made her return to the award show stage.
During the 2023 EMMY Awards, Applegate bravely took the stage to present an award as the audience offered her a standing ovation, one she jokingly called ableist. Applegate stunned in a red dress, supported by a cane and an aid, as she got emotional looking at all of her peers supporting her. Take a look at the particularly special moment:
Christina Applegate has been open about her multiple sclerosis (MS) diagnosis, which she originally announced in August 2021. She previously revealed that her role in Dead to Me was likely her final acting role, considering how difficult it was to perform with the various changes to her body as a result of MS.
She most recently revealed that her appearance at the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards – an awards show she is no stranger to – was likely her last as an actor. “It’s my last awards show as an actor probably, so it’s kind of a big deal,” she said in an interview with the Los Angeles Times in February.
The 51-year-old mother of one sent a strong message with her wardrobe selection – pairing her long, tuxedo-like gown with a cane that said ‘FU MS.’ She attended the awards show with her daughter, Sadie Grace LeNoble, who wore an all-black ensemble with a black coat, black shirt, boots, and matching hat.

Christina Applegate was nominated for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Comedy Series at the 2023 SAG Awards for her role in Dead to Me. Other nominees included Rachel Brosnahan, Jenna Ortega, Quinta Brunson, and Jean Smart – who ended up winning the award for her role in Hacks.
Like we mentioned above, Applegate is no stranger to the SAG Awards. While she has never won an award, she has been nominated seven times in her career – three times for her role in Samantha Who? and four times for her role in Dead to Me. She was last nominated for an SAG Award in 2021 and 2020.
Applegate previously talked about how her diagnosis came in the middle of filming the final season of Dead to Me, resulting in the production being suspended for five months. She set a goal for herself, that being to finish what she started. While it wasn’t easy and she was heavily limited, she did exactly that.
The final season was released on November 17. In the months that followed, she made several public appearances, including her Hollywood Walk of Fame ceremony – where she spoke of her MS diagnosis while standing barefoot next to her star on the infamous Walk of Fame. It was a special moment for her.
Christina Applegate Entering the Next Chapter of Her Career
While Applegate has remained fairly firm about Dead to Me being her last performance as an actor and the SAG Awards being her final awards show as an actor, she has also remained firm that this isn’t the end of the 51-year-old in Hollywood. In fact, she’s already making plans for the next chapter of her career.
That next chapter is going to look a bit different with her focusing on voiceover roles, but she also has plans of producing and developing a number of projects. For example, she’s already been rumored to reprise her role as Kelly Bundy in the infamous Married… With Children sitcom through animation.
No matter what the future holds for the legendary actress, she hopes to be an inspiration to others as she continues her fight with multiple sclerosis. She has already faced criticism and disgusting comments about her appearance as a result of the disease, but has clapped back in the most Applegate way.

The comments came after her appearance at the 28th Critics’ Choice Awards, where she was nominated for Best Actress in a Comedy Series. She attended that awards show with her daughter, Sadie, and the pair twinned with their matching outfits. She called her 12-year-old daughter the ‘best date ever.’
