Chris Pine knew nothing about The Princess Diaries returning for a third film, but is interested if the call comes.
The 44-year-old actor, who made his onscreen debut alongside Anne Hathaway in The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement in 2004, discussed the speculation in an interview on Tuesday, Oct. 8.
“I don’t know anything,” he said to Hoda Kotb and Jenna Bush Hager on Today with Hoda & Jenna, before urging his fans to take action. “Call Disney. Call Bob Iger. I don’t know anything about it.”
While he may not know anything about the new film, that doesn’t mean he isn’t interested. “I would love to come back,” he said, adding that he thinks a third film is “fantastic” for the franchise.
For those who don’t remember, Pine played the role of Nicholas Devereaux in the second film. Devereaux was a nobleman who initially plots to steal Princess Mia’s throne but ultimately falls in love with her.
He’s also known for his roles as James T. Kirk in the Star Trek reboot film series and Steve Trevor in the Wonder Woman franchise. He made his directorial debut with Poolman last year.
Pine details how his life changed after ‘The Princess Diaries 2’
Pine has been open in the past about how much his role in The Princess Diaries 2 meant to his career.
He recently talked about that impact in an interview with NBC’s “Sunday TODAY with Willie Geist,” where he revealed how much money he made and how he found out he landed the role.
“I was driving on the freeway – it was the height of summer – and I got a call from my agents that I booked the job,” he said, adding that he was paid $65,000 for the gig.
“It was like they’d just told me I’d made $50 million. It was absolutely earth-shattering,” he continued. “I just remember distinctly knowing in that moment that my life had changed somehow.”
Just two years after landing the role, Spine starred in another romantic comedy, Just My Luck, alongside Lindsey Lohan. Being involved in the new Princess Diaries film would bring everything full-circle.
Hathaway reveals film No. 3 in iconic way
The big announcement came on Oct. 4, when Hathaway took to Instagram to confirm a third film was in the works. And she did so in an iconic way.
“Shut up!” she said, referencing her character’s iconic line as she counted to three on her fingers.
“Miracles happen ✨???? Back to Genovia,” she added in the caption. “The fairy tale continues.”
As the news went viral, E! News confirmed that Crazy Rich Asians director Adele Lim was taking over as director. Gary Marshall, who passed away in 2016, was the director behind the first two films.
“As a diehard fan of the original Princess Diaries, I’m beyond excited to be a part of bringing the third iteration of this beloved franchise to life,” Lim said, adding that he looks forward to “celebrating its core tenants of female power.”
