Actress Charlize Theron is the proud mom of a 7-year-old named Jackson and a 4-year-old named August.

In a recent interview with Pride Source, Theron opened up about being a mom to Jackson, who is transgender, and all of the things she’s still learning since her child came out.

One of the most difficult changes for Theron has been remembering to use the correct pronouns when referring to Jackson.

And while Theron doesn’t want to take away Jackson’s opportunity to share her own story one day, if she chooses to do so, Theron says it’s still important for her to be an advocate for her daughter.

“My daughter’s story is really her story, and one day, if she chooses, she’ll tell her story. I feel like as her mother, for me, it was important to let the world know that I would appreciate it if they would use the right pronouns for her.”

Jackson was 3 years old when she told Theron that “I’m not a boy.” Theron continued: “I think it became harder for us the older she got that people were still writing about her in the wrong pronouns, and also I was still talking about her in the press using the wrong pronoun. It really hurt her feelings. I don’t want to be that mom…”

And an advocate the mom of two has been, even before adopting her daughter. As Pride Source reports, Theron is known for taking on roles in support of the LGBTQ+ community.

And when asked if her daughter’s journey now influences the movie roles she takes now, Theron says because her daughter’s journey is all still very new to her and her family, it hasn’t really been a factor as of now.

“Well, this is all pretty new for us, so it hasn’t really kind of come into question. I don’t really necessarily know if it will.”

And as for her youngest daughter August, she’s continuing to live her life however she feels like living it. “I love that she feels safe enough to explore in her little-girl brain that anything is possible and that she’s gonna go and discover that for herself.”
