It’s now being learned that carbon monoxide was detected at the Happy Smiles Learning Center. Eventually, fire officials discovered a leak at the daycare.
It’s unclear the condition of the child who was discovered unconscious at this time, CBS Philadelphia reports. It’s also currently unclear where the leak originated and just how high the levels of carbon monoxide detected at the daycare were.
According to Johns Hopkins Medical Center, “symptoms of CO poisoning include headache, dizziness, weakness, nausea and vomiting, rapid heartbeat, shortness of breath, seizures, chest pain, disorientation, and loss of consciousness.” The website continues to say that carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning “needs to be treated right away by getting outside to fresh air and calling 911.”
Based on preliminary reports, it appears that is exactly what the daycare did. And much like smoke detectors, there are also CO detectors for homes and buildings alike. It’s unclear if the daycare was equipped with such detectors.
The Mayo Clinic reports that “carbon monoxide poisoning occurs when carbon monoxide builds up in your bloodstream. When too much carbon monoxide is in the air, your body replaces the oxygen in your red blood cells with carbon monoxide.
