Actress and model Brooke Shields‘ daughter 18-year-old Rowan Francis wore her mom’s 1998 Golden Globes dress to prom! The star showed how proud she was of Rowan in an Instagram post.
“I thought it was a special night when I was nominated for a Golden Globe and wore this dress in 1998, but nothing could have prepared me to see my daughter wearing it to her prom ❤️ proud mama!”
Brooke Shields is very conscious on how she interacts with her daughters’ body images.
In 2019, Brooke Shields told People Magazine, “Their bodies are so important to them,” speaking of her daughters, Rowan and Grier Hammond, 15. The model has been very open about her own struggle with body dysmorphia and has worked hard to ensure her daughters have healthier relationships with their own self-image.
She emphasized that “whatever you say is heard, so you have to really be careful how you say whatever it is you’re saying to girls in particular. I really have to be like, ‘How would this sound if it was said to me at 13?’ I celebrate the differences in their bodies.”
As a mom, the actress is learning to appreciate and stand up for herself.
“I learned to say ‘no’ this year and it came through me saying to my daughters, ‘This does not have to be your problem. You don’t have to take care of everybody all the time,'” Brooke Shields explained. “You try to teach them to take the high road but at times, you have to say, ‘That did not make me feel good. I didn’t appreciate it. I’m not going to succumb to that level’.”
In another conversation with People, Shields talked about how her own body never fit into the expectations for models. She said, “I was never skinny. I was always athletic which means you don’t fit in the sample sizes.”
However, now her daughters are helping her see herself in a new light. “My daughters say I’m curvy. To them curvy is different. I watch them celebrate it. I’m learning from them and they always say you’re better off with something that shows your body rather than a muumuu.”
