It’s been three weeks since Britney Spears spoke in court about how the conservatorship she’s been under for the last 13 years has affected her life. For years, the hashtag “free Britney” has spread across social media, with many of her fans and supporters fearing she was unwell as a result of the conservatorship.

However, for years, Britney had repeatedly told her fans via social media that she was fine. That all changed though three weeks ago when she revealed what it was really like living under a conservatorship.

Now, Britney Spears was back in court again, via the phone, where Judge Penny will consider Spears’ new counsel and other petitions within the case.

As the hearing began, Britney Spears supporters showed up in droves, not just in front of the LA courthouse holding the hearing, but in other places around the U.S., particularly D.C.

And Spears won big! During the hearing, the judge is now allowing Spears to hire her own counsel as opposed to having one appointed to her. And she already has!

According to People, the singer has hired Mathew Rosengart. Rosengart’s whose firm is no stranger to representing Hollywood superstars, which include Steven Spielberg, Sean Penn, Ben Affleck, and Eddie Vedder.

The decision comes after Britney’s personal conservator Jodi Montgomery filed a petition to give the singer the right to hire her own counsel. “After 13 years of court-appointed counsel, she wants to select her own counsel,” the petition read. “At the hearing on June 23, 2021, Ms. Spears addressed the Court and repeatedly expressed her desire to select her own counsel, without an additional medical evaluation.”

Britney Spears is also done with her father, Jamie Spears.

During the most recent hearing, Britney, via the phone, told the judge, “I’m here to get rid of my dad and charge him with conservatorship abuse. I want him investigated…This conservatorship has allowed my dad to ruin my life.” She also talked about how controlled her life has been, especially while under the conservatorship.

From 70-hour work weeks to extreme dieting, Britney said, “That’s more than a regular job. Their goal was to make me feel crazy and I’m not and that’s not OK.” The singer even revealed that her father went as far as to take her license away for eight months because she received a “speeding warning,” not even an actual ticket.

“I want to get my dad removed,” Britney told the judge. “My dad is ruining my life.”

During her testimony three weeks ago, Spears called the conservatorship abusive and noted that she’s been “in denial. I’ve been in shock. I am traumatized.” And that she just simply “wants my life back.”

She further stated that she “shouldn’t be in a conservatorship if I can work. The laws need to change. I truly believe this conservatorship is abusive. I don’t feel like I can live a full life.”

Spears also admitted that she’s “not happy. I can’t sleep. I’m so angry, it’s insane.” And when it comes to expanding her family and starting a family with her longtime boyfriend, she said she can’t because “this so-called team won’t let me go to the doctor to take [my IUD] out because they don’t want me to have children. I want to be able to get married and have a baby. I was told right now in the conservatorship I am not able to get married and have a baby.”

Additionally, she also claimed that she was forced into taking Lithium against her will. And as a result, she “couldn’t even stick up for herself” because the medication left her feeling “drunk.”

And a lot has happened since giving her testimony. As CNN reports, not only has a slew of Hollywood elites spoke out in support of Britney Spears, but her team also began stepping down.

On June 30, according to CNN, Britney’s father, Jamie, who was once the sole conservator before stepping down just a year ago, called for an investigation into his daughter’s claims. Bessemer Trust, the co-conservator of Spears’ $60 million estate, asked to resign, as did her longtime manager Larry Rudolph.

A few days later, Spears’ court-appointed attorney for the duration of her conservatorship, Sam Ingham, also asked to resign. Now, Spears has the opportunity to choose her own lawyer.
