Britney Spears and her legal team may be catching a break in her court battle against her father, Jamie Spears. The two sides have been involved in an intense back-and-forth over the past couple of years as Britney attempts to regain control of her $60 million estate and life.
Between 2008 and 2021, Spears’ father had all legal responsibility over Britney – including personal and financial affairs. His ownership over her sparked the #FreeBritney movement on social media, which has continued for years. Jamie Spears finally stepped aside last year.
The latest development in the courts could mean great things for Britney Spears and her legal team after a judge ordered her former manager to cooperate with the proceedings – including handing over documents (text messages, emails, other documents) and answering questions.

This isn’t the first time her management group, Tri Star Sports & Entertainment Group, has been asked to cooperate. They originally tried to avoid the subpoena last year and while the judge sided with the company on parts of their motion, Britney Spears ultimately got the best of it.
“If Tri Star and Ms. Greenhill had nothing to hide, they would have simply complied with the subpoenas instead of trying to suppress them and choosing a strategy of obfuscation and stonewalling,” Spears’ attorney Mathew Rosengart said in a statement to BuzzFeed News.
Rosengart added they were ‘pleased they will finally have to comply with the core, key portions of the subpoenas and be deposed about them,’ adding the recent ruling was an ‘important victory’ moving forward. This comes after disturbing allegations of abuse of power by Jamie.
According to Britney, her father and Robin Greenhill, an employee at Tri-State, maintained full surveillance of her phone communications and even bugged her room with an audio recorder. While those allegations have been denied by the opposition, Britney is doubling down on it.
It Wasn’t a Complete Victory for Britney Spears and Her Legal Team
While Jamie Spears and Tri-State will have to fork over certain documents and answer certain questions in accordance with the court, the judge did rule in their favor on certain points. For example, they don’t need to provide anything regarding the creation of the conservatorship.
Not only that, but Britney Spears’ legal team requested the release of any communication her father had with Lou Taylor – chief executive of Tri-Star – outside of his role as conservator. Other limitations came in the form of accounting documents and financial statements.
While Spears certainly has a lot to be happy about with the recent ruling, the attorney for Tri-Star seems to share that same sentiment – calling it ‘a complete victory’ to BuzzFeed News. “The Court has now clearly confirmed the limited scope of the case once and for all,” he said.

These two sides have been going at it for years now and while we certainly seem to be getting closer to an end, this is a legal battle that will likely continue to drag out for as long as possible. For now, we’ll have to wait and see what we learn from the documents soon to be released.
