More than a year after the #FreeBritney movement began, Britney Spears‘ father, Jamie Spears, is addressing the situation head-on. Unsurprisingly, he unequivocally denounced the movement and its supports, which claims, among other things, that Jamie is deliberately (and cruelly) fighting to keep Britney (and her assets) under his control for his own personal gain.
Jamie spoke with Page Six earlier this week about #FreeBritney specifically, calling the people behind the hashtag “conspiracy theorists” and the movement overall “a joke.”
Britney Spears’ Dad, Jamie Spears, Finally Addresses the #FreeBritney Movement
Shortly following an incident in which a court hearing about Britney’s years-long conservatorship was derailed by #FreeBritney fans and “activists” who accessed the court’s Zoom link, Jamie gave his unfiltered thoughts to The New York Post‘s Page Six.
“All these conspiracy theorists don’t know anything,” he told the paper. “The world don’t have a clue,” he said. “It’s up to the court of California to decide what’s best for my daughter. It’s no one else’s business.”
Some people within the #FreeBritney movement have accused Jamie (and others) of using Britney as a money-making machine for himself, and some have even accused him of stealing money from Britney, who has released several albums and toured multiple times since 2008, when she was placed under a legal conservatorship following her public breakdown.
“I have to report every nickel and dime spent to the court every year,” Jamie told Page Six, referring to those rumors. “How the hell would I steal something?”
Jamie also added that some people within the #FreeBritney movement are severely overstepping their bounds.
“People are being stalked and targeted with death threats,” he said. “It’s horrible. We don’t want those kinds of fans.”
He then added, “I love my daughter. I love all my kids. But this is our business. It’s private.”
Britney has been under a court-ordered conservatorship for 12 years. What was originally thought to be temporary has clearly become something more than that, which strikes many in the #FreeBritney movement as odd and concerning.
While many of the details of the conservatorship still remain a mystery, we do know that her father Jamie and others are involved in managing certain elements of Britney’s life, including her finances.
#FreeBritney supporters feel that Britney, who is 38-years-old and a mother to two boys she shares custody of with ex Kevin Federline, should be in charge of her own life. Some even believe that Britney wants more control over her life and has been trying to send secret coded messages to fans via Instagram to let them know she wants them to keep pushing for her freedom. Several sources have denied this is true.
TMZ reports that a California court keeps close tabs on the conservatorship, checking in with Britney, Jamie, and other involved parties every three months. They also claim that no source has ever told them Britney is actively seeking to end the conservatorship, which goes against some fans’ beliefs that she is actively struggling to end it while being thwarted by her father.
It would seem that there are just too many unknowns. Britney herself has asked for fans and #FreeBritney supporters to stop stirring the pot. We can only just hope that, whatever the situation, Britney is being cared for in the best way possible and is not secretly being taken advantage of.
