What would you say is more difficult – being a mother or becoming a wrestling champion? Most people would have a hard time answering that question because they’ve never experienced both – so it’s impossible for most people to compare the two. For Brie Bella, that question is a little easier to answer.
Brie Bella, now known professionally as Brie Garcia, became a mother in 2017 when she gave birth to her first child – a daughter named Birdie Danielson – with husband Bryan Danielson. Three years later, she became a mother of two when she welcomed her second child and first son – Buddy Dessert.
Well before she became a mother, Bella made a name for herself in the WWE – alongside her sister, Nikki Bella (now Nikki Garcia) as The Bella Twins. Brie reached the pinnacle of her career when she won the WWE Divas Championship on April 11, 2011 – meaning she’s both a mother and wrestling champion.

So, which is more difficult? According to Brie Bella, raising a toddler is far more difficult than winning a wrestling championship. She set the record straight in an interview with PEOPLE on the red carpet at the ESPY Awards on July 12. Her twin sister, who accompanied her on the carpet, agreed with the sentiment.
“You don’t get a break. You know, when you’re a champion, you at least get to a point where it’s 1, 2, 3, and it’s done. There’s no 1, 2, 3, tap, tap. That’s it. No tapping with the toddler,” Brie Bella explained. She went on to add that her son – who turns 3 years old in August – is already following in her footsteps.
“So Buddy, he’s watched a couple AEW shows, but he gets so worked up, I have to turn it off,” Brie Bella tells PEOPLE. “I’m like, okay, I don’t know. He knows how to do the moves too good.” Brie made her WWE debut with the Smackdown brand in 2008 and was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2021.
Earlier this year, Brie and Nikki Bella decided to step away from the WWE – citing a need to move forward with the next chapter of their lives as they turn 40 on November 21. They not only retired from the WWE, but they retired the name that made them famous (Bella) and returned to their maiden name (Garcia).

Brie Bella wasn’t the only one to speak about being a mother at the ESPYs. In that same interview with PEOPLE, Nikki Bella – who agreed being a mother is more difficult than being a wrestling champion – confirmed that, while her son isn’t following in her footsteps, he is taking an interest in his father’s career.
Nikki Bella gave birth to her first (and only, thus far) child – a son named Matteo Artemovich – on July 31, 2020 (just one day before her sister gave birth to Buddy) with her hubby, Artem Chigvintsev. Matteo turns three years old in a few weeks and is already taking an interest in dancing – just like his father.
As for being a mother, Nikki enjoys sharing that experience with her sister. “We do it together. We pour wine and we just enjoy the chaos,” Nikki told PEOPLE on the ESPYs red carpet on July 12. “We’re the champion tag team of moms. Beyond. And we’re very hands-on. We love mom-ing, doing the mom-ing.”
