Beyoncé and Jay-Z’s 8-year-old daughter, Blue Ivy tried and tested the very popular handwashing experiment with soap and black pepper. You might have seen the experiment in your social media feeds over the past couple of months as it’s a great way to illustrate the importance of good hygiene and a reminder to wash your hands more often.
With the help of grandma, Tina Knowles-Lawson, Blue demonstrates how soap repels bacteria and germs.
Blue is absolutely adorable as she narrates the experiment.
The short, minute-long video shows Blue demonstrating the importance of good hygiene. Knowles-Lawson shared the video of her grandaughter with the caption, “My brilliant granddaughter Blue did this experiment to show how washing your hands fights the virus.”
“Hey, y’all. And, since we’re stuck, I have this little DIY experiment that you can do at home too. This is why it’s important to wash your hands,” Blue says to start the video. She had us at “Hey, y’all.”
She was recently honored with an NAACP Image Award.
Blue Ivy was awarded the outstanding duo/group prize at the NAACP Image Awards for her song “Brown Skin Girl.” Blue received a writing credit on the song, also sings a few lines.

She was also awarded the Ashford & Simpson songwriting award for the song that appears on the live-action remake of The Lion King.
Blue isn’t the only celebrity promoting good hygiene.
Actor Kristen Bell shared a similar video in mid-March. The Frozen star shared a video that was originally captured by a preschool teacher named Amanda Lorenzo, who used pepper, water, and soap to teach her students about the importance of washing their hands properly.
Blue is doing a great public service by illustrating the importance of good hygiene. We commend her.
The CDC outlines a 5-step process to wash your hands the right way:
- Wet your hands with clean, running water (warm or cold), turn off the tap, and apply soap.
- Lather your hands by rubbing them together with the soap. Lather the backs of your hands, between your fingers, and under your nails.
- Scrub your hands for at least 20 seconds. Need a timer? Hum the “Happy Birthday” song from beginning to end twice.
- Rinse your hands well under clean, running water.
- Dry your hands using a clean towel or air dry them.
The CDC has started a new campaign called “Clean Hands Save Lives.” It encourages everyone to practice good hygiene and keep hands clean to help stop the spread of the coronavirus. So, listen to Blue, and keep those hands clean!
