Bindi Irwin, daughter of the late conservationist and TV personality Steve Irwin, married her partner in a secret and intimate ceremony in front of her close family. Steve Irwin, of course, became world-famous for his TV program and was affectionately known as “The Crocodile Hunter.”
Bindi, who is 21-years-old, is passionate about conservation and loves animals just like her father. She shared news of her wedding to Chandler Powell, 23, in a touching Instagram post on Wednesday.
Steve Irwin’s daughter, Bindi got married at the family’s zoo.
Because no Irwin wedding would be complete without wildlife, the couple was married in the gardens of the Australia Zoo in Queensland. The zoo was opened by her grandparents in the 1970s and is still run by the Irwin family.
With Australia on lockdown at the moment, it was an odd time for a wedding. Fortunately, the Irwin literally lives at the zoo and so they didn’t break any rules with the gathering. The small candlelit ceremony was all the couple wanted.

The small wedding ceremony was attended only by the family because Australia is currently on lockdown.
Bindi shared a note with her post, “We held a small ceremony and I married my best friend. There are no words to describe the amount of love and light in my heart right now. We’ve planned this beautiful day for nearly a year and had to change everything, as we didn’t have guests at our wedding.”
As part of the ceremony, Bindi lit a candle in memory of her late father.
“Today we celebrated life and reveled in every beautiful moment we shared together in our Australia Zoo gardens. Mum helped me get ready, Robert walked me down the aisle, Chandler became my husband and together we lit a candle in Dad’s memory. We shared tears and smiles and love. Thankfully, since we all live at Australia Zoo as a family, we could be there for each other.”
It was a sweet gesture to remember her father who died in 2006 after being stabbed in the chest by a stingray’s barb during the production of a documentary. At the time, the news was a huge shock because many had seen the “crocodile hunter” in precarious situations before.
Bindi’s brother shared a sweet, congratulatory message for his newlywed sister.
Shortly after the wedding, Bindi’s brother Robert Irwin shared the wedding photo on Instagram with a sweet note stating how elated he was for his sister. Robert also lives at the zoo and continues the Irwin tradition of conservation and wildlife welfare.
“This is a day that we will never forget. Bindi and Chandler, words cannot describe how happy and proud I am that today you started your married life and celebrated love during a difficult time for our world,” Robert wrote.
Robert is proud of his sister who “celebrated love during a difficult time for our world.”
“And I was beyond honoured to get to walk Bindi down the aisle today. Even though all of your wedding plans had to change at the last minute to keep everyone safe and healthy, it truly was an emotional and beautifully spontaneous day,” the note continued. “I know that Dad was with us, and we are all so delighted for your future as husband and wife. I love you both.”
We’re living through scary times, but this was a ray of light in the darkness. We’re happy for both Bindi and Chandler and wish them the very best. While we might not have expected a zoo wedding from the Irwin family, we certainly should have.
