For many of us, Beyoncé can do no wrong. But some are concerned by her recent promotion of the extreme diet she used while preparing to headline Coachella less than a year after she gave birth to twins Sir and Rumi.
In her Netflix documentary, Homecoming, Queen Bey gave fans a behind-the-scenes glimpse into what it takes for her to be performance-ready. Having just given birth to her twins, the mom-of-three shared how she followed an expensive, restrictive vegan diet called 22 Days Nutrition to get back in shape for her performance.
Keeping it real, the singer admitted, “In order for me to meet my goal, I’m limiting myself to no bread, no carbs, no sugar, no dairy, no meat, no fish, no alcohol. And I’m hungry.”
Assuring fans that being the Beyoncé they see on stage is no easy task, the hitmaker added, “I definitely pushed myself further than I knew I could and I learned a very valuable lesson: I will never, ever push myself that far again.” The doc follows her as she tirelessly practices choreography and undergoes grueling workouts.
Critics were quick to point out that Beyonceé was glamorizing diet culture while also cashing in on the “plant-based lifestyle” trend after she posted a promotional video about the diet on her YouTube channel. Along with husband Jay-Z, the Homecoming star encouraged fans to go vegan for a chance to win free concert tickets, in support of The Greenprint Project. Some cringed as doc scenes included a clip of Bey stepping on a scale and celebrating after fitting back into a form-fitting costume.
Others also questioned why Beyoncé, who was just on record saying she would never push herself as hard as she did to get ready for her Coachella performance again, would promote the very same diet to her millions of fans. (And to be honest: It’s not as if the people she’s promoting the diet to have a massive headlining performance to get ready for, so what is the point?)
The diet may have worked for Bey and her iconic Coachella performance, but it doesn’t sound like something the rest of us need to try. Instead, just watch Homecoming while eating a big bowl of popcorn. Life’s too short to do otherwise.
What do you think of Beyoncé promoting such an extreme diet to her followers? Sound off in the comments!
