“How can I protect my kids from mosquitos?
Hi! Can we talk bugs?! I have 5 kids who love to be outside but hate bugs, as do I. I’m tired of them getting covered in mosquito bites. What do you mamas use? We’ve been using bug repellent spray but I hate the smell and the chemicals on my kids. The mosquitoes are already killer! Help…
Also, do you have tricks to keep bees/wasps away? I keep seeing ads for those stickers that “confuse” mosquitoes but I don’t want to invest in something that doesn’t work. Thanks!”

Advice Summary
The community offered this mom in need a lot of great advice. Read some of their responses below.
“Avon Skin So Soft lotion. It’s not a bug repellent but it works like one. They also have mosquito repellent bands on Amazon.”
“Dryer sheets in their pockets and socks.”
“Do you have space for a couple of chickens? They will eat all the bugs, including ticks.”
“Citronella plants. You shake the plant leaves to release the scent.”
“Put some tea tree oil in a spritzer bottle with water. Mosquitos, ticks, lice… they all hate tea tree oil.”
“Peppermint oil works.”
“Baby oil also works, and Vicks.”
“Bats eat tons of mosquitoes so you could put up a bay house (available online if not at local health food or home improvement stores). Also there are more natural repellants. I think Burt’s Bees has one I liked. Lightweight long-sleeved shirts & long pants do the trick while also acting as sunblock. Try rash guards & swim pants & they can jump in a pool or run in the sprinkler to cool off. Land’s End should have them.”
“I am also going to say citronella plants as well. We have five lining our back yard. One by the porch. Haven’t gotten hardly any bites this year and they eat us like candy.”
“I have yet to find any of the “tricks” to work! I do have mosquito plants that help and we use backyard Off spray that you hose down the yard with. It helps a lot and lasts about 3 months for us. The whole dryer sheet thing only made them worse!”
“Some pest control companies can do outside treatments for your yard for mosquitos and wasps.”
“Have you looked into the bug repellent bracelets? They’re $1 at Walmart and I haven’t been bitten while wearing one yet, and I get bit almost every time I step outside. Our backyard is an oasis for mosquitos.”
“Make sure you have no tall grass around the house and no standing water not even in planters or anything. Google vanilla extract to kill mosquitoes… it works awesome and on keeping ticks off. But you have to use pure vanilla extract with no sugars.”
