At five months old, Daniel Scrivner was severely injured while in the care of his babysitter. That babysitter has since been indicted for her role in his injuries and now his death.
As WAVY reported, Scrivner was getting ready to celebrate his first birthday as he remained in the hospital continuing to heal from the traumatic brain injury he sustained. The incident took place in February 2019 just after 3:00 in the afternoon.
According to WAVY and GoFundMe, 911 was told that Scrivner was having a seizure, but by the time emergency crews got to Scrivner he was unconscious. The then-five-month-old was taken to Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters in Norfolk, Virginia where doctors had to remove part of the infant’s skull to alleviate the pressure.
Babysitter Indicted Months Before 5 MO Died of His Injuries
During the investigation, it was determined that Scrivner’s injuries were not the result of an accident. And several months later, 27-year-old Jamie Shaffer, the boy’s babysitter, was arrested and indicted by a grand jury. As WAVY reported, Shaffer was also a mother.
Sadly, despite a hard fat battle and shortly after he was able to go home, on December 1 at 16 months old, Scrivner passed away. This was the last update on the GoFundMe account set up to help with the cost of the little boy’s medical expenses.
“We are heartbroken to say that on Sunday, December 1st at 4:47 p.m, Daniel went to be with the Lord. After suffering a cardiac arrest on Friday, his body was too injured to recover. He passed away peacefully surrounded by myself and his father. Thank you to those that provided prayers throughout Daniel’s journey. He was such a loved little boy and we find comfort in knowing that he is finally whole and at peace in Heaven. We love you all.”
Shaffer was first charged with malicious wounding and child abuse. It’s unclear if those charges remain or if more have been added.
