A mom writes in asking for advice about her 8-month-old daughter. She says her daughter has two teeth, which she is constantly grinding. This mom suspects her daughter does this because it feels good as she is still teething, but she doesn’t want her to damage her teeth. She especially does not want the teeth grinding to become a habit that follows her daughter as she gets older and her permanent teeth come in.

“How can I get my 8-month-old to stop grinding her teeth?
My daughter is 8 months old and has two-and-a-half teeth. The issue I have is she is constantly grinding her teeth. I’m thinking it might feel good on her gums or something, but I don’t want her to ruin her teeth. Any tips on getting her to stop? I don’t want it to be habit especially when she’s older and has her permanent teeth.”

Teething Advice Summary
The community offered this mom in need a lot of great advice. Read some of their responses below.
“I would call a dentist, preferably a pediatric dentist and ask. You will likely need to set an appointment.”
“My son did this…at about the same age and it lasted like 2 months. A lot of babies go through this stage. Try to give him different teething toys. But odds are you’ll just have to deal with it for a little while. It can become an issue if it goes on for too long.”
“My kid’s dentist told me this was normal as the teeth are new and the jaw is trying to align properly to accommodate the teeth coming in.”
“My son does it. I squeeze his cheeks together (gently) making a fishy face and it makes him mad but it makes him stop for a while. And other times I put the facial in his mouth so he can’t do it. It’s a phase.”
“My daughter did this a lot. Her dr said it was normal and wouldn’t ruin her teeth. When she saw a dentist she has perfect teeth. I would just give her a paci or teethed when she did it to help maybe relieve the urgent to grind”
“My son does the same thing. I got him a Razberry teething pacifier (you can get them at Walmart). Anytime he starts grinding his teeth I give him that and he stops.”
“I had the SAME questions and honestly there’s not much you can do besides try to distract her with a teething toy. We have the Nuby gummy toy and Zoli Sticks which are his favorites. Honestly they DO stop, until they start teething again LOL. My son is 11 months old and started doing that around 6 months when he got 5 teeth in 3 weeks. Now, he’s working on his last 1st-year molar and doing it again!! It’s like nails on a chalkboard to me. I’ll quickly hand him a toy or a frozen yogurt tube and that helps take his mind off it. The art of distraction is your friend!!…
… I think they do it because there’s all this “new stuff” in their mouth and it’s also so uncomfortable. We switch between Tylenol and Motrin, Motrin usually at night on the bad nights. Seems to help the swelling and pain a little better, plus it lasts most of the night and helps him rest.”
