Anderson Cooper is kicking himself over missing his son Wyatt Morgan‘s first steps! The journalist was on an assignment in Israel when he got the text from his co-parent and ex Benjamin Maisani.

Anderson Cooper just experienced the most frustrating thing about being a working parent.

On Wednesday’s episode of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Anderson Cooper said he reacted “with fury” when he learned he missed such a big moment. As a journalist, Cooper has to travel plenty for assignments and as such, her explained, “I was in Israel last week. It was my first work trip for ’60 Minutes’ and I was doing an interview and I get this text from Wyatt’s other dad, Benjamin, and he said, ‘He just walked!!'”

He continued, “I was like, ‘I can’t believe I missed this and that I’m doing this interview in Israel of all places,” which is a sentiment many a workin’ parent knows all too well. Anderson Cooper then pointed out the differences between his household as a kid and his current situation.

He explained “I got really pissed at Benjami. In my household when I grew up, you would lie about everything. He should have just lied. He should have lied and said, ‘Oh no, he’s not walking at all’ so when I got home and he walked, we’d be like, ‘Oh my god! It’s the first walk.'”

Cooper’s relationship with Father’s Day has changed now that he’s a dad himself.

While also talking to Stephen Colbert, he revealed that, before he was a father himself, Anderson Cooper “avoided” Father’s Day, as he lost his own father when he was 10. Growing up, “I just didn’t acknowledge (Father’s Day). Holidays and especially Father’s Day when you don’t have a dad is not even just bittersweet, it’s inexplicable. The pain was so great for most of my life I didn’t know Father’s Day was this date.”

However, the holiday has found a new place in his heart in the wake of fatherhood, along with many other connections to his dad. He explained, “The interesting thing about having a child is it’s made me sort of connect with my dad and my mom’s past and my brother’s past in a way that I never really anticipated. I feel like I’m in communion with them in some strange way. I remember things about my dad that I never remembered before because I’m experiencing them with Wyatt as a dad.”

Cooper previously revealed that Wyatt was named after his father in an Instagram post about his son’s birth,
