After publicly revealing that she is undergoing in vitro fertilization (IVF) in hopes of giving her son, Gene Attell, a sibling, comedian and actress Amy Schumer is continuing to share her journey with her social media followers.

On January 10, Schumer shared a very eye-opening picture on Instagram. The photo showed the c-section scar from Gene’s birth, as well as bruising on each side of it. The bruises are from the IVF needles she’s been using. (Warning: The image below may be emotionally triggering for some who have gone through IVF.)

Schumer wrote, “I’m a week into IVF and feeling really run down and emotional. If anyone went through it and if you have any advice or wouldn’t mind sharing your experience with me please do. My number is in my bio. We are freezing my eggs and figuring out what to do to give Gene a sibling.”

The following day, the comedian shared another photo. This time of her in a doctor’s office. Alongside the picture she expressed her gratitude after so many other people reached out to her, offering words of encouragement and advice having gone through a similar journey.

“Thank you, ladies and a few gentlemen. We are gonna freeze embryos hopefully. I learned to eat salty food after and drink Gatorade. Ice the area. Take arnica and put arnica on the bruises. To be patient and kind to myself and that there are sooooo many of us willing to be there for each other. Your stories helped me more than you can imagine. I feel incredibly lucky. I’m really hoping this works and staying positive. Much much love!”

Then on January 14, Schumer shared videos from her egg retrieval procedure. Both of the videos show the mom still loopy after waking up from the anesthesia.

While on an episode of Dr. Berlin’s Informed Pregnancy podcast, Schumer shared that after going off of birth control to start a family with her husband Chris Fischer she has since learned “that I have endometriosis and adenomyosis, so being off birth control was really tough on my body, and so I was in pain, I was in a lot of pain.”

And during her pregnancy with Gene, she experienced hyperemesis gravidarum, a severe form of morning sickness that lasted up until the 3-hour c-section she endured. Thankfully, as Schumer explained, the nauseousness went away soon after her son’s birth.

It’s unclear if Schumer endured IVF to conceive Gene or if she did so naturally. Nonetheless, despite all the hardships, Schumer admitted at one point that 2019 was still the best year of her life.

“Believe the hype, the hype is real,” she said of motherhood. “I’m so lucky.”
