Picking a name for your child is a pretty big deal. We mean, it’s the name they will be called for the rest of their lives.
But sometimes, without even realizing it, parents can make a mistake when picking out their child’s name and they don’t notice it until 10 months after they were born. That’s exactly what happened comedian Amy Schumer and her husband, Chris Fischer.

As many of Schumer’s closest fans know, on May 6, 2019, she and Chris welcomed their first son into the world. They named their son Gene Attell. As Page Six reported, Gene’s middle name was inspired by fellow comic and close friend Dave Attell, but what Schumer didn’t realize until recently was that if you say her son’s name altogether, it sounds like you’re saying “genital.”
Amy Schumer Reveals She Had to Change Her Son Gene’s Middle Name
As Schumer said during an episode of her podcast 3 Girls, 1 Keith, “Do you guys know that Gene, our baby’s name, is officially changed? It’s now Gene David Fischer. It was Gene Attell Fischer, but we realized that we, by accident, named our son ‘Genital.’”
It was then that their guest that day, actress Claudia O’Doherty, admitted it was her mom who pointed that misstep out to her, “My mum pointed that out to me, ‘Amy’s called her son “Genital,” and she was right!’”
As Schumer continued, they talked to Dave Attell before changing their son’s middle name to David, which is both Dave’s birth name and Schumer’s father’s name. “So, two stones,” Schumer quipped.
