Amy Grant is revealing that she is still dealing with health issues after devastating bike accident she endured in 2022.
In an interview with E! News, Grant revealed that she still suffers from memory loss as a result of the injuries she sustained. “I still have issues with my short term memory. My balance is still weird. I made a joke about it last night. You know, sometimes I walk around like I’m drunk and I just have to laugh about all of it.”
“I can’t remember what I can’t remember. I don’t know if I’ll get back on a bike. There’s so many great sports to enjoy and so… who knows.”
That’s not all, Amy, now 63, has endured. While recovering from her accident, doctors discovered a cyst in her throat that had to be surgically removed. It’s a discovery that Amy calls a “gift.”
Grant revealed that the cyst “went into hyper growth” due to how traumatic the accident was. “I had this five hour surgery and they took it out. So yeah, I actually had to learn to sing again. […] I just felt like an old beat-up car that went in and got a paint job,” Amy continued revealing that the surgery also left her with a little bit of face lift as well.
Amy Grant Opens Up About Her Recovery From a Bike Accident Last Summer; She’s Now Back to Making Music and Touring

In late-July 2022, Amy Grant was involved in a biking accident that left her hospitalized with cuts, abrasions, memory loss, and a traumatic brain injury. It was just a normal day for her when she hit a pothole while riding her bicycle – she was immediately sent to Vanderbilt University Medical Center.
While she was in stable condition at the time, Grant knew she had a long recovery ahead of her. She wound up staying in the hospital for two nights before being ordered to continue her recovery at home. As a result, she was forced to cancel her shows and concerts that were scheduled for August of last year.
Now nearly seven months later, Amy Grant is back and is feeling ‘re-revved up’ as she returns to the recording studio and, most importantly, returns to the stage. On Wednesday, she sat down with Craig Melvin of TODAY to talk about her recovery and what the future holds for her as she returns to music.

“I wrote this long book. It was a spiral notebook. And I was just writing to remember, writing — making sure I could remember everybody’s name in my family, which I couldn’t, at first,” said Amy Grant of her recovery. Her brain injury made it difficult to remember names and she even forgot lyrics to her songs.
Grant initially returned to the stage for her Christmas tour, but needed the help of a teleprompter and was struggling to stand while wearing heels. She admitted to being ‘so scared’ and would hold onto the piano to keep herself up straight, but was grateful to be working with so many people who always had her back.
That was a few months ago, but doctors have told her that it may take as long as 18 months for her to fully recover – especially considering the biking accident wasn’t the only medical issue she has dealt with over the past few years. For example, she was forced to undergo open-heart surgery back in June 2020.
Most recently, she had a cyst removed from her throat, which was further impeding her ability to sing. She described feeling like she had ‘an Adam’s apple that keeps getting bigger. “Unbeknownst to me, I’d had a thyroglossal duct cyst.” It was yet another setback in her career, but it didn’t keep her down for long.
Amy Grant Says She Now Feels ‘Fantastic’
Her medical struggles over the past three years are somewhat of a musician’s worst nightmare – not being able to sing and/or remember lyrics to your hit songs will create a void in any performer’s life. Nonetheless, Grant now feels ‘fantastic’ and is looking forward to what her future has in store for her.
“I feel fantastic. I mean, really from 2020 on, I feel like I had to, if I were a car, I’ve made a lotta trips to the shop. And I feel like I’m emerging. I went, ‘Oh man, I feel like a classic now.’ And actually sort of re-revved up in a really beautiful way,” she said – comparing her recent struggles to a car needing multiple repairs.
Eventually, that car is going to be back on the road – doing what it does best – and that’s the case for Amy Grant, who is frequently referred to as ‘The Queen of Christian Pop.’ The six-time Grammy Award winner has sold more than 30 million albums worldwide and had the first Christian album to go platinum.

“To me it’s just been a great reminder that life is dynamic, people are dynamic. Nobody’s all good, nobody’s all bad. A circumstance is not all bad or all good. Even in the worst, awful, worst trauma, beauty and goodness are still present,” she said – adding she’s no longer afraid and is moving forward with love.
