The Philadelphia Police Department is investigating a suspected homicide after a 66-year-old American Airlines flight attendant – who was identified as Diana Ramos – was found dead in a Marriott hotel at the Philadelphia Airport with a sock in her mouth. She was found by housekeepers on Monday evening.

According to initial police reports, Ramos was expected to check out of the hotel room two days prior to her being found. There were no signs of forced entry, no signs of a struggle, and no weapons were found in the immediate area – though they did find ‘several sealed bottles of prescription drugs’ in the room.

Housekeepers came across her body at around 10:45 p.m. on Monday (September 25). While her cause of death has yet to be released, police officers say her death is ‘suspicious’ and they’re now working with the Homicide Detectives Division to determine how she died and whether anyone else was involved.

“Everybody is still trying to figure out what happened and why her crew just left her,” one American Airlines worker said in a statement to PEOPLE – adding that Diana Ramos’ crew was based out of Los Angeles. “A lot of moving parts and questions right now. Very sad,” the unidentified source continued.

One Flight Attendant Speaks Out, But Only Raises More Questions

One member of her crew said Ramos was scheduled to act as the lead flight attendant for a flight from Philadelphia back to Los Angeles, but she never showed up. While they normally meet in the lobby of the hotel before heading to the airport, that wasn’t necessary because the hotel was located at the airport.

“Upon reaching their gate and realizing that one of the flight attendants wasn’t at the gate, the crew notified the gate agents they were missing a crew member and one of the crew members say that another crew member tried to call the hotel twice to get them to check on the missing crew member,” they added.

In the wake of Ramos’ death, American Airlines issued a statement saying they’re ‘doing everything we can to ensure all affected have the support they need during this difficult time.’ They’ll continue to cooperate with police officers and investigators and send their condolences to the family and colleagues.
