Father Sues Home Security Company Ring (and Amazon) Because of Alleged Hacking Incidents

Amazon has been sued by a father who claims their home surveillance brand Ring did not protect his family against being hacked.

The class-action lawsuit, which was first reported by TMZ, was filed on behalf of John Baker Orange who alleges that someone hacked into his Ring system and began making comments to his kids, even going so far as to encourage his children to get closer to the home security cameras.

This isn’t the first time Ring has come under fire for their lack of security measures. There is another video which went viral in mid-December that shows someone speaking through a Ring device telling an eight-year-old “I’m Santa Clause. Don’t you want to be my best friend?”

Ring devices have reportedly been hacked for years, in states all across the country.

The lawsuit also includes Ring hacks that have occurred in Connecticut, Florida, New York, Georgia and Texas. It also claims that Ring and Amazon have both failed to take any responsibility for the lack of privacy in their devices.

“The ramifications of Defendant’s failure to properly secure their cameras and attendant access protocols may be felt for years to come,” the complaint says. “Hackers have had access to information derived from those cameras for years, including but not limited to intimate details of household members, work schedules, and property contents.” The only way for customers to limit access to this information is to turn the device off.

Last week, more than 3,000 Ring customers had their personal information stolen, including emails, passwords and the names of their cameras. The hackers could access the users address, payment information, as well as camera footage from the past 30-to-60 days.
