Alfonso Ribeiro and his wife, Angela Ribeiro, took to their respective Instagram accounts to provide a health update regarding their daughter, Ava Sue. On Friday (May 12), Ava underwent emergency surgery to prevent the likelihood of scarring after falling off her sit-down scooter – one day before her 4th birthday.
Both parents shared the same photo of their daughter’s injuries, which included some harsh bruises and burns around her right eye, elbow, shoulder, and more. Alfonso gave a shoutout to the kind and talented people at Kare MD Skin Health, who helped treat his daughter, and revealed how proud he was of Ava.
“Not the kind of day you want the day before turning 4. Just want to give a heartfelt thank you to [Kare MD Skin Health] for the emergency service and procedure to help lessen the likelihood of [scarring]. So proud of how brave my baby girl was during the surgery,” Alfonso wrote in his Instagram caption on May 12.

Ava’s mother, Angela Ribeiro, added more detail about the accident in her Instagram caption, which was posted around the same time as her husband’s. She revealed that she had ‘a vision/motherly intuition’ when she woke up on Friday that Ava would end up in the ER – her motherly senses were tingling.
“I announced to the fam, kids, sitter & friends helping out getting ready for Ava’s birthday party that ‘we are not doing anything crazy or dangerous today that could potentially end up with an ER visit.’ I literally made everyone lock eyes to me when I said these words,” she wrote in her caption on Instagram.
She insinuated that her warning wasn’t taken seriously and the scooter accident happened shortly after. Angela sent a massive thank you to Kare MD Skin Health – more specifically, Dr. Raffy – for treating her daughter after-hours and helping to limit the chances of Ava experiencing harsh scarring in the future.
“Not a fun way to spend your last day as a 3-year old, but she was a trooper. Giving this sweet girl some extra cuddles tonight,” she continued. Several celebrities took to the comments to send their well wishes – including Allison Holker, Kimberly Van Der Beek, Sharna Burgess, Will Buxton, and much more.
Angela and Alfonso Ribeiro Celebrate Ava’s 4th Birthday
On May 13, the day after Ava Sue’s emergency surgery, Angela and Alfonso Ribeiro celebrated their little girl’s 4th birthday. Angela posted a photo of Ava getting ready to eat some Swedish pancakes – which looked delicious, by the way – though it’s unclear what type of activities (if any) they indulge in that day.
The team at Kare MD Skin Health took to their Instagram on May 13 to thank Alfonso Ribeiro for his kind words and wish Ava a happy birthday. “Thank you for the very kind words [Alfonso]. We are so honored to take care of your precious princess Ava. Best wishes for a speedy recovery,” they wrote in the caption.
The birthday comes just two weeks after celebrating their son’s 8th birthday – Anders Reyn was born on April 30, 2015. Angela and Alfonso both took to their Instagram accounts to wish him a happy birthday and shared a photo of him standing next to a giant ‘8’ balloon. Their family is growing up so fast!
