Alex Murdaugh Admits to Lying About the Cause of His Housekeeper’s Death in Order to Improperly Obtain an Insurance Settlement

Alex Murdaugh is once again making headlines for all the wrong reasons. The 64-year-old former attorney is already serving two life sentences for the murders of his wife and younger son, but has more than 100 other charges against him for financial crimes he committed while working as an attorney.

One of the many cases against him involves an insurance claim he tried to obtain after his longtime housekeeper, Gloria Satterfield, in 2018. At the time, he claimed it was his dogs that caused her to fall on his property, ultimately resulting in her death. Now more than 5 years later, he’s saying that was a lie.

“No dogs were involved in the fall of Gloria Satterfield,” his attorneys wrote in a May 1 filing. “After Ms. Satterfield’s death, [he] invented Ms. Satterfield’s purported statement that dogs caused her fall to force his insurers to make a settlement payment, and he stated that she was not on the property to perform work.”

The filing also claims that Alex Murdaugh worked with Satterfield’s family to ‘succeed in a claim on those facts, which the representatives of the Satterfield estate believed were true’ – adding that he ‘did not act in concert with any co-conspirators.’ His attorney, Jim Griffin, seconded these claims in a statement.

Griffin also believes the Satterfield family – as well as the family’s attorneys, Eric Bland and Ronnie Richter – should be listed in the lawsuit against Murdaugh since ‘they have ultimately recovered the fraudulent insurance proceeds.’ Bland has since denied these claims in a statement of his own on May 2.

In a series of tweets, Bland claimed his clients (the Satterfield family) never received any money from the settlement and, instead, received money ‘from other parties other than Nautilus’ (the insurance company). He went on to accuse Alex of stealing the money from the settlement and that his clients are still owed it.

“Seems there is buzz because liar liar Alex now says he allegedly made up the story that Gloria Satterfield didnt fall down Moselle stairs by his dogs.  Since when did Alex become the modicum of honesty and credibility,” Bland continued in his Twitter rant – calling the claims ‘nothing but noise.’

Alex Murdaugh Still Faces More Than 100 Criminal Charges

Alex Murdaugh is going to spend the rest of his life in prison – South Carolina’s McCormick Correctional Institution, to be exact. He is currently serving two life sentences after being found guilty of murdering his younger son – Paul Murdaugh – and wife – Maggie Murdaugh – on the night of June 7, 2021.

While those murders are the worst of his crimes, Murdaugh is also facing more than 100 charges related to financial crimes he committed over a more than 10-year period while working as a lawyer – 11 of those charges are related to the death of Gloria Satterfield and the insurance settlement that came as a result.

His crimes have received nonstop media attention for the past couple of years as more charges are brought forth – and new information is released, including his most recent admission of guilt. Things are only going to grow worse for Murdaugh, though he has yet to enter a plea for any of the financial charges.
