According to recent legal documents submitted to a court in Columbia, South Carolina, Alex Murdaugh wasn’t home at the time of his wife and son’s death. The document alleges he was at his mother’s house in Varnville before heading back to his home, where he found the bodies of Maggie and Paul Murdaugh.
The killings occurred between 9:00 and 9:30 p.m. on June 7, 2021, at the family’s hunting estate in Colleton County – about two hours from Charleston, South Carolina. Both victims had multiple gunshot wounds, presumably from a shotgun, and were found near the estate’s dog kennel just after 10:00 p.m.
Despite authorities not having a motive for why Alex Murdaugh would murder his wife and son, he was arrested and charged with their murders. He pleaded not guilty in July and denied any involvement with either murder. His trial is scheduled for early next year – January 30, 2023, until February 17, 2023.

In the formal alibi filing, Murdaugh claims he left his property not long after 9:00 p.m. and arrived at his mother’s house around 9:20 p.m. He spent about 25 minutes with his mother and the nurse’s aid before heading back home. By the time he arrived – which was around 10:05 p.m. – his wife and son were dead.
During his drive to and from his mother’s house, Alex Murdaugh allegedly made several phone calls – including his older son (Buster), his brother (John Marvin), his sister-in-law (Liz), a groundskeeper (CB Rowe), and attorney/friend (Chris Wilson). The context of each phone call was not revealed.
The alleged alibi comes a few weeks after the prosecution obtained a video from Paul’s cellphone that showed Alex and Maggie Murdaugh talking to him near the dog kennels around 8:44 p.m. – roughly 35 minutes before Alex left the property. An hour later, Maggie and Paul were found dead near that location.
This is just the start of what’ll be a trial filled with various twists and turns as the justice system attempts to get to the bottom of what happened on June 7, 2021. If Alex Murdaugh’s alibi checks out and he’s telling the truth about his whereabouts, then the question becomes – who killed Paul and Maggie Murdaugh?
