People can’t stop talking about Al Roker’s hilarious reaction to learning Savannah Guthrie tested positive for COVID mid-show.
As cameras captured during the February 28 show, Sheinelle Jones announced that Guthrie had fallen ill and went home at the top of the 8:00 hour. Jones was flanked by Al and Carson Daly as she shared the news.
But people were quick to break out in laughter as Roker, clearly nervous about the situation, slowly distanced himself from his co-workers to avoid any unwanted contamination.
People Can’t Stop Talking About Al Roker’s Reaction to Learning Savannah Guthrie Tested Positive for COVID Mid-Show
“Al Roker trynna use PTO mid-broadcast,” one person wrote about the video. However, some shared their genuine concern for Roker, who dealt with his own scary health issues late last year. “Al Roker almost died when his last COVID infection brought on blood clots this past fall. Now his employer exposed him again, mere months later,” a concerned fan added.
As Mamas Uncut previously reported, during the March 1 taping of Today, Savannah Guthrie and Hoda Kotb were still missing from the anchor desk.
As Mamas Uncut previously reported yesterday, Guthrie left the show abruptly on February 28 after falling ill and testing positive for COVID mid-show. As a safety precaution, Guthrie left the show immediately.
Sheinelle Jones updated the audience on the goings-on, saying, “By the way, it has been an interesting morning for us. As we said, Savannah left early, she wasn’t feeling great, so she took a Covid test. It came back positive. So, as soon as we found out, she rushed home to rest up. So Savannah, we love you, wishing you a speedy recovery.”
Now, it has been revealed why Kotb has been absent from the show. According to Deadline, Kotb last appeared live on the show on February 17.
Her colleague, Craig Melvin, offered an update during the show on March 1. First addressing Guthries absence, Melvin said, “[Savannah] is at home after a positive Covid test yesterday. We are wishing our friend a speedy recovery.”

He then shared an update about Kotb. “As for Hoda — we know a lot of you have been wondering how she is doing. We can tell you that Hoda is OK. She has got a family health matter that she has been dealing with, so we look forward to seeing Hoda and Savannah back here at the desk very, very soon.”
Currently, Savannah is on an “Instagram fast” in observance of Lent. While she does have assistants who help run her social media account, Guthrie has not yet shared an update on her accounts.
While Guthrie has been absent from social media, Kotb has been updating her feed. On February 27, she posted a graphic that read, “Choose Hope.”
Several comments on that post suggested that they were praying for Kotb and hoping everything was okay. Kotb is no stranger to posting images like the one above to her social media accounts. However, she’s been doing more often recently.
The Today Show crew has had their fair share of illnesses over the recent months. As Mamas Uncut previously, their colleague Al Roker struggled with a lengthly illness at the end of last year.
According to a statement he released on his personal Instagram page Roker revealed he had a recent health scare that landed him in the hospital. Alongside a picture of a bouquet of flowers, Roker shared a few more details.
“So many of you have been thoughtfully asking where I’ve been,” Roker began. “Last week, I was admitted to the hospital with a blood clot in my leg which sent some clots into my lungs.”
“After some medical whack-a-mole, I am so fortunate to be getting terrific medical care and on the way to recovery. Thanks for all the well wishes and prayers, and hope to see you soon. Have a great weekend, everyone.”
Thankfully Roker’s health has improved, and he is back on the show. Mamas Uncut will update this article as new information regarding Guthrie and Kotb’s absences becomes available.
