In April 2017, Scream Queens alum Abigail Breslin commemorated Sexual Assault Awareness Month with an Instagram photo that read, ‘consent II. you are not obligated to have sex with someone that you’re in a relationship with. dating is not consent. marriage is not consent.’
She captioned the photo ‘I knew my assailant’ and added the hashtag #breakthesilence. Now more than five years later, she continues to break the silence as she speaks out against domestic abuse and violence. In fact, she used the “breakthesilence hashtag in a post recently.
In commemoration of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, she decided to share a little more about her own story – which took place over a two-year period in what turned out to be an abusive relationship. She mentioned being taken advantage of over her innocence and naïveté.
The post went on to explain that Abigail Breslin was beaten and locked into rooms to deal with injuries on a regular basis – she frequently used makeup to cover her injuries. She was also the victim of verbal abuse, consistently bringing her down and making her feel lonely and stuck.
“I felt so unworthy of anyones love. I felt ugly and hated. I felt like I deserved less than dirt. I was certain, there must be something inherently WRONG with ME. That I was a b***h, a problem, stupid, useless, ridiculous, overly sensitive, unreasonable and unlovable,” she said in the post.
She went on to say that the two years she spent in this relationship were the ‘loneliest’ she has ever been. In a post in 2017, she further explained that she never reported her abuser in fear of people not believing her and didn’t want to view herself as a ‘victim’ – so she decided to hide it.
“I am beyond thankful for the support of my family and friends who played an instrumental and invaluable role in helping me leave this horrible situation,” she said. “I will forever be indebted to those closest to me for them not only assisting me but, BELIEVING me,” Breslin continued.
Abigail Breslin offered some words of advice to others going through a similar situation, adding that the ‘aftermath of abuse is a complicated and individual experience.’ She shouted out the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence (NCADV) for all the amazing work they do.
“If you are in an abusive relationship currently, you CAN get out of it,” Abigail wrote. “I know it seems impossible and terrifying, but you have survived so much and you CAN survive leaving if you have the right tools and support,” she pleaded, urging people to contact NCADV for help.
Five Years Later, Abigail Breslin is in a Happy and Loving Relationship
It has been five years since Abigail Breslin dropped that bombshell of an Instagram post and while she still deals with PTSD – albeit not as severe as a few years ago – she has since moved on from her abuser and is now in a happy, healthy, and loving relationship with Ira Kunyansky.
In fact, the two announced their engagement on February 22 of this year – which Breslin shared in an Instagram post captioned, “I said ‘duh.’” Not much is known about her fiance, but reports suggest that he works in the travel industry. Regardless, he seems to stay out of the limelight.
Believe it or not, Kunyansky didn’t even know Breslin was an actress when they first met – something Breslin opened up about on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon in 2021. Now, you can find the two turning heads on the Red Carpet as they profess their love for each other.
