People aren’t always candid about their personal challenges during pregnancy, but leave it to Amy Schumer to share the good, the bad and the ugly in a recent Instagram post. The outspoken comedian has never shied away from sharing details about her life and she isn’t starting to hold back now.
Amy and husband Chris Fisher welcomed their first child, Gene Atwell, on May 5, 2019. During her pregnancy, Amy had hyperemesis gravidarum, which makes you constantly nauseous and sick (fun times!). Throughout her pregnancy, Amy shared updates about the hardships she battled, and she’s maintained that level of intimate honesty even post-birth.
Last week, Amy shared a video detailing her experiences with some of those struggles. In the video, which is part of a promo for her new Netflix special Growing, she showed what she went through with hyperemesis gravidarum specifically. Watch below:
Fans responded with thanks to Amy for sharing her experience. Commenter @jeepie__ said, “I had hyperemesis too! Women who haven’t been thru it don’t understand that we are the MAMA MARINES of pregnancy.” Another fan, @whatwouldsarahdo, said, “This was my life for 10 months. You’re a legend for bringing awareness to the hell it is. And, no, ginger doesn’t help.”
Earlier in her pregnancy, Amy was hospitalized because of the hyperemesis and had to cancel her shows in Texas. She shared with fans that she was deeply sorry, but “everyone who says the 2nd trimester is better is not telling the full story. I have hyperemesis and it blows. Very lucky to be pregnant but this is some bullshit.”
“Hospital Underwear for Life”
More recently, Amy shared a hilariously candid photo of her out walking with baby Gene. In the photo, she is wearing a bra and underwear and pushing a stroller down a dirt road. The caption is what really makes it.
“5 weeks. Hospital underwear for life!” Oh, Amy. Never change!

That’s why it’s so great to see women like Amy Schumer use their platform to share the reality of their pregnancy and motherhood struggles. In the end, it makes all of us feel so much less alone.
