Advice Summary
The community offered this mom in need a lot of great advice. Read some of their responses below.
“They can eat everything you eat. Just cut/mash it up into small pieces.”
“I fed my 9-month-old everything I ate since about 8-9 months. He is now 11 months no teeth. He eats ribs, steak, chicken. I’m a vegetarian but he loves meat so it is what it is.”
“Don’t give pieces of hot dog or anything that size. Think choking issue more than chewing with teeth. Soft foods, that can be held or spoon-fed, puréed.
“Little cut up tofu cubes soaked in anything she likes: apple juice, tomato juice/sauce, soy sauce, chicken broth. Chickpeas. She can eat these with her fingers and not make a big mess. Lentils & rice. Peas. Barley. Anything soft and small, or gummable like whole wheat saltines. Soft cheese, or tiny cheese blocks, soft whole-grain healthy bread. Hot cereals or cold yogurt without sugar (add fruit, maple syrup or honey, and/or tiny seeds like sesame, poppy, chia, or flax). Mini marshmallows as a treat. The usual: applesauce, mashed potatoes, and original Cheerios. Most fruits in small pieces.
“My daughter is about to turn 1 and still no teeth lol. She LOVES soup! I just started pasta with her, she loves the Gerber puffs as well. Pretty much anything soft. If it makes you nervous just start with tiny portions and then increase as needed. My daughter also LOVES LOVES LOVES bananas so you can mush that up as well. She also loves the Gerber yogurt. She eats one of those in the morning and a banana and she’s pretty close to full if not full.”
“Don’t do cheese, babies shouldn’t have dairy until after 12 months. Don’t do anything with honey either. Give them soft foods or easily dissolvable foods.”
“I know a momma that had a child that didn’t get teeth until she was 1 and she would feed her whatever she wanted. Things like apples included. Momma said that she just rubbed her gums on it and it broke down on its own.”
“My daughter has been eating anything we eat since 6 months. Meats, pasta, etc. She just got teeth this past month. But she mastered eating within a few weeks. They can eat better than you think with no teeth. Her first meal was steak, potatoes, & rice. She devoured it. Cut meats into strips to start.”
“Gerber makes little ravioli. They don’t have sauce. My daughter used to love to feed them to herself.”
