In times like these, it’s important to keep the things we can control as normal as possible. Because of the global health crisis we are all living in, our ways of life have changed a lot and all of a sudden, so when it comes to traditions, it is more important now than ever before that we stick to those traditions when we can.

With Easter just around the corner and Passover already underway, there are a lot of traditions that families won’t be able to uphold as they normally would, but it is possible to modify some of those traditions in order to keep the holidays feeling like they normally would.

For instance, yes, a lot of our local churches and synagogues have been closed in order to help stop the spread of COVID-19. And yes, we might not be allowed to go to our grandmother’s house to enjoy her home-cooked ham and scalloped potatoes, but we can listen to mass and enjoy a meal with the sound of our loved ones filling our separate homes.

With these uncertain and unprecedented times ahead of us, traditions are so important. They are important because they help give us a sense of normalcy. They help us center ourselves when everything else around us seems to be going awry, and they allow us to connect to the people around us who we love the most. But most of all, traditions help us feel loved and love is something we all need right now.

The Importance of Upholding Traditions During a Pandemic

It is so important, even with the holiday coming up to still STAY HOME, but you can grab your phone, your iPad, your computer, whatever you are using to communicate with those outside of your house and contact them this Sunday and throughout the week. It is as simple as downloading Zoom or going live on Instagram and participating in a family dinner even though you are miles apart.

Create a zoom meeting and stream mass so that you can watch it together like you would if you were able to attend church. Go on amazon, order an egg coloring kit, and have a virtual happy hour that includes coloring eggs with the little ones in your family like you would if we weren’t in the middle of a pandemic.

Heck, order yourself some chocolate, jelly beans, and whatever else your heart desires, throw it all in a basket and hide if for yourself to find. But before you go looking for those eggs or that basket you hid from yourself, call your parents, call your siblings, and make them look for it with you.

This virus as already taken so much from us and it continues to do so. So instead of letting it take our holidays as well, let’s all do what we can to make this Easter and Passover as normal as possible. But please remember, we are all safer at home.
