Former Olympic gymnast Shawn Johnson East clapped back at mommy shamers after she excitedly shared a video of her daughter’s “first flip” on Instagram.
Johnson and her husband, Andrew East, shared the video that was taken during their Miami vacation with their fans in February. In the clip, Johnson can be seen on the beach holding their daughter, who they affectionately call ‘Roo,’ as she slowing and carefully flips the 3-month-old in a mid-air somersault.
At the very end of the video, East comes to give Drew a congratulatory kiss. The Olympic gold medal winner captioned the clip, saying, “Roo’s first flip!! [Drew Hazel East], she was PERFECTLY safe…so don’t even haha).”

And yet, despite her initial warning to the mommy shamers, they came after her anyway. One follower commented on the video, saying, “While she may have been perfectly safe, sometimes you are a bit rough handling such a young baby, and not making her warm enough when you take her out. She needs at least socks if not shoes, as well, and hats.”
And Johnson didn’t hesitate to respond to the comment. She wrote back, “Are you holding her? Have you physically felt her sweat when she wears socks? Or felt her strength when she stands? Or seen her fuss until she stands up because she hates laying down. Nope. You haven’t. I’m her mama. I know.”
She then took her clap back on step further by issuing a video response on her Instagram Story. You can listen to her full statement below:
Luckily, many of Johnson’s fans also came to her defense. “I am assuming your advice is well-meant, as you have probably raised many children yourself. However, advice that is not asked for is likely not well received, and justifiably,” one fan responded to the original commenter. “In other words, just hush up!”

However, despite a few comments from mommy shamers, most of her followers wondered when Roo would be following in her mom’s footsteps and start taking gymnastics classes. Even Ladarius from Netflix’s Cheer commented, “Let’s put her on Navarro now!!”
We have no doubt that Johnson and East will support baby Drew in anything she pursues when she gets older, just like we have no doubt that they know when their baby girl is safe and when she’s not.
