Simone Biles reveals why she competed in the Olympics despite painful calf injury

As the world watched one of the greatest gymnasts in history take the mat for warm-ups at the Paris Olympics, they watched Simone Biles injure her calf.

After landing a practice tumbling pass, she began to limp.

She told her coach, “my calf or something just pulled like all the way.” She left the stadium before coming back with her calf tapped up.

Despite the injury, Biles took center stage and didn’t disappoint. She took home three gold medals and a silver medal.

In a new trailer for the second part of her Netflix documentary, “Simone Biles Rising,” her former teammate and friend, Aly Raisman, said she asked Biles, “How did you do it in all the pain?”

Biles told Raisman, “I couldn’t have people call me a quitter again.”

Biles was referring to the response she received at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics in 2021. Biles was forced to leave the competition after she experienced a case of the twisties.

The “twisties” are a “mental block that affects physical performance,” causing a gymnast to get lost in rotation. Getting lost in the air for a gymnast like Biles could result in serious injury.

“Nothing sets your heart on fire like being so determined for a goal,” Biles said in the trailer, “and you have one chance at it.”

But as Biles continued, at 27, she is considered old in the world of gymnastics and she admits her “body is on a ticking time bomb.”

And despite all of her life experiences leaving her more confident, her age leaves her “a little bit more afraid.”

As for what this means for Biles’ future in the sport, that is unclear. When asked if she has any plans of attempting to compete in her fourth Olympic Games in Los Angeles in 2028, Biles has played it coy.

In the trailer, Biles said her goal was to win the Paris Olympics, what happens after that remains to be seen. Biles will be 31 years old at the next Olympic Games.

She did however admit that Netflix will be the first to know what her future plans are as the second part of her documentary is set to air on Oct. 25.
