Just several moments ago, news reports revealed that Ted Kaczynski, mostly known to the general public as the “Unabomber” had died.
Infamous Unabomber Ted Kaczynski Found Dead
Kaczyński was arrested and has been in custody since 1996 after going on a roughly 20-year bombing spree. He was discovered dead in his prison cell, ABC News reported on June 10.
Kaczyński was 81 years old.
Originally, he was serving time in a maximum security prison in Colorado. However, nearly two years ago, in 2021, Kaczynski was moved to a medical facility in North Carolina when his health began to fail.
Kaczyński is responsible for detonating 16 bombs over a 20-year period. He killed three people and injured nearly two dozen other victims.
Prior to being found guilty of his crimes, Kaczynski was considered a child prodigy and a brilliant mathematician. According to the FBI, he detonated his first homemade bomb at a university in Chicago in 1978.
In 1995, he sent the FBI a 35,000-word essay “claiming to explain his motives and views of the ills of modern society. After much debate about the wisdom of ‘giving in to terrorists,’ FBI Director Louis Freeh and Attorney General Janet Reno approved the task force’s recommendation to publish the essay in hopes that a reader could identify the author,” the FBI explained.
It was eventually Ted’s brother David who identified him as the Unabomber. “David provided letters and documents written by his brother that were studied by an FBI linguistic analysis who “determined that the author of those papers and the manifesto were almost certainly the same.”
He was found guilty in 1998.
