In January 2022, actress Priyanka Chopra Jonas and performer Nick Jonas became parents for the first time. In a new interview with Today, Chopra revealed that their now 15-month-old daughter was born prematurely.
The couple used a surrogate to grow their family. While talking with Today, Chopra recalled those first moments she and Nick learned their daughter had been born earlier than expected.
Priyanka Chopra Reveals the Scary Moment Meeting Her Daughter for the First Time
“I remember he just held me by my shoulders, and I said, ‘Just tell me what to do because I don’t know what to do.’ And he’s like, ‘Just get into the car with me,’” Priyanka told Hoda. “She was born, and from the moment she took her first breath to now, she’s never been without one of us, ever.”
After Malti Marie was welcomed into the world, she spend 110 days in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). Chopra shared how she felt in those first moments, seeing her baby girl need constant care while in the NICU.
“I realized very, very early that I did not have the luxury to be scared or to be weak because she was scared and weak. And I had to be her strength as her mom. I needed to make her feel at every given moment that she’s not alone … that we’ve got her.”
By May 2022, Malti used that strength from her parents and became strong enough to go home. And while the new parents are rather private when it comes to their baby girl, Chopra, and Jonas have surprised fans on more than one occasion.
Malti made her first public appearance when her dad and uncles received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and again on her mom’s Instagram page celebrating her first trip to India.
And while Priyanka has since fallen into the groove of parenthood, the actress admitted she was terrified in those first few days of having Malti home.
“I couldn’t sleep for days, because now suddenly she was home without a monitor. I used to put my ear on her chest. I would wake up every couple of minutes just to see if she was OK. For weeks, this went on.”
Now, Malti is thriving and LOVING the food of her mom’s native country. “She’s like, eating [the spicy Indian food] with both her hand … as if she’s eating ice cream!”
Malti is also a fan of the Hindi lullabies Chopra would sing to her while she was in the NICU. To this day, the proud mama says the songs still soothe her. How sweet is that?
