New information about Alex Murdaugh’s time in prison is being revealed.
Shortly after being found guilty of murdering his wife and son, Alex Murdaugh was sentenced to life in prison in March 2023. However, where he would be spending the rest of his days was being kept secret. Now, multiple reports are suggesting Murdaugh’s prison location has been revealed.
According to Fox News, Murdaugh has been relocated to McCormick Correctional Institution in South Carolina. McCormick Correctional Institution is a maximum security prison.
It’s reported that Murdaugh was “moved to statewide protective custody due to the notoriety of his case. As Fox News reports, a press release revealed that “inmates in this unit have validated protective concerns and are placed in a specialized unit to separate them from the general population. Their location is not disclosed for safety and security reasons.”
It’s unclear why his location is now being made public information.
After his father was found guilty of murdering his mother and brother, Buster Murdaugh broke his silence. However, his most recent statement has nothing to do with his father’s verdict or the brutal killings of his mother and brother.
Instead, Buster’s statement is defending his own innocence. If you haven’t been following the Murdaugh trials, you might not already know that Buster’s name has been tied to the death of a 19-year-old boy from Hampton County, South Carolina, NBC News reports.

According to reports, 19-year-old Stephen Smith was found dead on the side of a road in Hampton County, South Carolina, in 2015. The location of Smith’s body was approximately 15 miles from Buster’s home and two to three miles from where Smith’s vehicle allegedly ran out of gas that night.

An autopsy report released on July 8, 2015, revealed that Smith’s body showed signs of being struck by a vehicle, including “a stretched brain stem, irregular abrasions and contusions, and blood in his airways.”
However, while his name has been tied to this case in the media, police have never connected Buster to the case throughout the investigation. In his statement, he asks to have his name omitted from the news coverage surrounding the 2015 hit-and-run incident.
“These baseless rumors of my involvement with Stephen and his death are false,” Buster claimed in a statement that was released on Monday, March 20. “I unequivocally deny any involvement in his death, and my heart goes out to the Smith family.”
Buster continued, adding, “I am requesting that the media immediately stop publishing these defamatory comments and rumors about me. I have tried my best to ignore the vicious rumors about my involvement in Stephen Smith’s tragic death that continue to be published in the media as I grieve over the brutal murders of my mother and brother. I love them so much and miss them terribly.”
As Mamas Uncut previously reported, Buster’s father, Alex Murdaugh, was, however, found guilty of two counts of murder and two counts of using a firearm during a crime. Alex was then sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for the shooting deaths of his 52-year-old wife, Margaret, and his 22-year-old son Paul.
Despite the verdicts, Alex continues to maintain his innocence and intends to appeal the conviction.
