Several months after Pat Sajak leaned into rumors that he could retire soon, the legendary host of Wheel of Fortune left a recent live audience a bit confused.
As the Elvis Duran and the Morning Show crew reported, a new video of the moment is going viral on YouTube. According to the title of the video, the moment was captured on January 25, 2023.
Wheel of Fortune Audience Left Dumbfounded By Pat Sajak’s Comments About Vanna White While Filming
The video shows Sajak standing next to a contestant named Alisha. It was the end of the show as the contestant attempted to solve a bounce puzzle that fell under a category called “Thing.” The contestant inevitably fell short when she was unable to guess “Baffling Mystery,” but it led to what is being described as an “uncomfortable” back and forth between Sajak and his longtime professional partner Vanna White.
The moment started at the 18:10 mark of the video below:
“Are there any mysteries we should know about you?” Vanna initially asked Sajak, to which he replied, There are no mysteries about me, though I am baffling, as you know from our years together.”
Sajak continued, adding, “We’ve been through a lot in 40 years. Remember I used to visit you in prison?” Vanna answered Sajak by saying, “I don’t remember that.”
Pat continued, “Was that you? Well, you were – you had other problems at the time.” According to Elvis Duran and the Morning Show, the audience reportedly didn’t know how to react to Sajak’s joke.
That’s when Sajak closed out the show, saying, “We’ll see you next time for another walk down memory lane!” Vanna went on to say a “Bye” of her own before adding, “He’s joking!”
As Mamas Uncut reported in September of 2022, Pat Sajak shocked the world with one of his statements—he’s preparing his departure from the show!
“Years go by fast. We’re getting near the end. It’s been a long (time). We’re not gonna do this for another 40 years. The end is near,” Sajak revealed to ET. “It’s an honor to have been in people’s living rooms for that long. People were out there welcoming us. We’re happy and proud.”
Sajak continued by saying how proud he is of the show for lasting so many decades in a business that isn’t known for its longevity.
“In most television shows by this time, you would have said, ‘that’s probably enough,’ but this show will not die. It appears I may go before the show,” he joked.
On September 25, Wheel of Fortune will be hosting their upcoming “Celebrity Wheel of Fortune” episode. Sajak admitted his dream guest star would be Meryl Streep to see her say, “Come on, big money!”
However, Sajak joked that “[Streep] won’t come on because she found out you can’t win an Oscar for this.”
In the end, Sajak didn’t specifically reveal when exactly he would be retiring or if the show will continue on without him after he leaves. His beloved partner Vanna White, who has been on the show just as long has not responded to Sajak’s retirement plans.
It’s unclear if she will stay on the show or if she will ultimately retire as well.
Wheel of Fortune first premiered in 1975.
