Christina Applegate Responds to Disgusting Comment Regarding Her Appearance: “I Told Her That It Wasn’t Nice”

Christina Applegate has been vocal about her struggle with multiple sclerosis (MS) since being diagnosed with the disease in early 2021. The diagnosis came while filming the final season of Dead to Me, which caused production to temporarily stop. They eventually picked it up and Applegate finished the season.

Since then, Applegate has made several public appearances as fans got their first real look at her since learning of the diagnosis – she put on about 40 pounds and needs a walking cane for assistance. While she’s still learning to accept her new normal, her fans quickly showered her with love and support.

Unfortunately, not everyone has been kind to Applegate and she has been the victim of a wide range of disgusting hate comments regarding her appearance – some of which dismissed her MS diagnosis completely. It reminds us that even a national treasure like Christina Applegate isn’t immune to hate.

On Tuesday, Applegate took to Twitter to recount an interaction she had with one of those hateful commenters. She explained how she made the unfortunate decision to read some of the comments attached to a PEOPLE article about her and her daughter at the Critics Choice Awards on Jan. 15th.

“Of course, I told her that it wasn’t nice. This was her reply. What is wrong with people? By the way, I laughed,” the 51-year-old actress added on Twitter. She shared a photo of a direct message she received from the commenter – who proceeded to double down on her hateful, disgusting, and untrue comments.

“MS didn’t make you look that way, a plastic surgeon did. And you are a scammer and are not [Christina Applegate],” the commenter wrote in the message. They even had the audacity to second that comment with, “And a bad plastic surgeon at that.” To be clear, iMS did make her look ‘that way,’ not plastic surgery.

In December, Christina Applegate discussed how she uses humor to cope with her diagnosis. “My humor shield keeps me okay, but of course, down on the insides, you feel the things. I do it to kind of deflect and then also make people not be scared to be around me,” she said on The Kelly Clarkson Show.

Christina Applegate has been stepping out of her comfort zone in recent months, with her latest public appearance coming at the 2023 Critics Choice Awards on January 15th – which she attended with her daughter, Sadie Grace LeNoble. Applegate was nominated for Best Actress in a Comedy Series.

“Just a fun fact, the suit my kid is wearing was Scott Weiland’s suit from one of his solo album covers. Scott gave my husband, Martyn, that suit long ago in the glorious 90’s. Also we were quite a pair last night. She fractured her ankle this week, hence the boot, and me…MS,” Applegate wrote on Twitter.

She also added that her walking cane was made by Neo Walk – a company that makes ‘handmade acrylic walking sticks in gorgeous colors and designs,’ according to their Twitter profile – and that her suit was by Christian Siriano. In another tweet, she added a message for all her ‘MS WARRIORS.’
