On November 5th, Amy Schumer enjoyed the honor of hosting Saturday Night Live for the third time in her career – she was also a host on October 10, 2015, and May 12, 2018. It was yet another successful and hilarious performance that had fans laughing from the moment she walked out for the monologue.
Schumer took to Instagram on Sunday, the day after the show aired, to reveal a horrific experience she had earlier in the week. She ended up missing SNL rehearsals on Thursday after rushing her 3-year-old son to the emergency room, where he was admitted for RSV – also known as respiratory syncytial virus.
RSV is a virus that’s currently sweeping the nation as pediatric hospitals fill up with new cases. While an increase in cases is expected every year, that increase usually doesn’t come until December – leaving many healthcare professionals wondering what the future holds. It can be fatal if not treated properly.

This was the hardest week of my life. I missed Thursday rehearsals when my son was rushed to ER and admitted for RSV. Shout out to all the parents going through this right now. I got to be with him the whole day at the hospital,” said Amy Schumer in her Instagram post, adding her son is now ‘home and better.’
Schumer had her three-year-old son, Gene David, on May 5, 2019, via a cesarean section due to her endometriosis – a rare disease of the female reproductive system. She later had her uterus removed to relieve some of the pain caused by the disease. She has been married to Chris Fischer since 2018.
In the Instagram post, Schumer also gave a shoutout to the ‘beautiful humans’ at SNL – who were supportive and kind as she spent the day with her family. She thanked Lorne Michaels for putting such a good crew together, consisting of ‘the most talented people with the kindest hearts,’ as Schumer put it.
“The reason this show is so fun to do isn’t actually the performance or the show itself. It’s getting to spend time with the people there. The cast and the writers of course but the people who are behind the scenes making it run smooth are my favorites,” continued Schumer. It probably won’t be her last time hosting SNL.
Amy Schumer Isn’t the Only Mother Worried About RSV
Amy Schumer understands the horror and panic that settles in when they’re forced to rush their child to the hospital and learning they have respiratory syncytial virus. It was enough to keep her away from her work, but it didn’t keep her or her son down for too long – she hosted Saturday Night Live two days later.
Just two weeks ago, we shared a story about an Ohio mother who rushed her two-month-old son to the hospital after he started experiencing symptoms related to RSV. She knew of the symptoms and warning signs because her oldest son went through the same exact thing six years prior – she was prepared.
Today, many children and infants are coming down with serious cases of the disease because they’ve never been exposed to it before – especially considering the COVID-19 pandemic has kept everyone indoors for the past two years. Hospitals are also seeing a surge of older patients for the same reasons.

Since this virus usually picks up in the month of December, we can expect cases to continue surging and hospitals to continue filling up. That’s why it’s best to practice good hygiene by washing your hands frequently and minimizing exposure to anyone who might be sick. With awareness, we can overcome this.
