You may have heard already, but Kim Kardashian West is going to school to be a lawyer and recently has become one of the most well-known criminal justice reform activists in the United States. And in an interview with Today‘s Jenna Bush Hager, the mom of four opened up about her inspiration behind her decision to become an activist.
In her interview with Today, Kim admitted to Jenna that her newfound passion for activism is in direct correlation with becoming a mother to 7-year-old North, 4-year-old Saint, 1-year-old Chicago, and 6-month-old Psalm.

“When you become a mom, you become so protective. You want to hopefully make their world the most perfect place ever and ours, obviously, isn’t. And I definitely see how, especially black men, are treated in this country still differently. And I’m raising two black men, so I want to make sure that my world and their world is as safe and as fair as possible.”
And so after marrying her husband, Kanye West, and becoming a mom to their four kids, Kim searched for ways to make their worlds a better place. And that’s when she learned about Alice Johnson, a woman who was serving a life sentence for a non-violent, first time, drug offense.

Kim was instrumental in Johnson’s early release, and the success of it all enticed the reality star to keep fighting for those who need advocacy the most. “It’s a journey that I never imagined I would be on, but I’m so glad that I am. And I love that we have been able to get a lot of work done and I just don’t want to stop that.”
Now, a successful criminal reform activist, Kim also played a major role in the case of Rodney Reed who was sentenced to death after being found guilty of murder. However, when new evidence was discovered in the case, Kim made a plea through her Twitter account to Texas Governor Greg Abbot.

Also in her interview with Today, Kim told Jenna that the moment she learned about Reed‘s stay of execution was an emotional one for him, for her, and for the entire team working on Reed’s case. “It was extremely emotional and he said, ‘Praise Jesus.’ I could just feel his soul when he said that.”

Reed was scheduled to be executed for the 1996 murder of his alleged mistress 19-year-old Stacey Stites. However, after maintaining his innocence, a judge recommended that Reed get a 120-day stay of execution after new evidence in the case had reportedly been found.
Kim continues to work with Reed’s legal team as a part of her apprenticeship as she continues to work her way through law school so that she can make the world a better place for her children and the rest of their generation.
