Kate Middleton, the Princess of Wales, was recently seen speaking to hospital personnel and new parents at the maternity unit of the Royal Surrey County Hospital in Guilford, England. She’s hoping to improve and evolve maternity care for mothers and children throughout the UK.
Her visit is part of a much larger mission through her Royal Foundation Centre for Early Childhood, which aims to “raise awareness of why the first five years of life are just so important for our future life outcomes” said Kate Middleton in a Twitter video back in June of last year.
PEOPLE had the opportunity to sit down with Amy Stubbs, the deputy director of midwifery at the hospital Middleton visited on Wednesday. “She was very relatable. She talked a lot about how it felt for her when she became a mother,” said Stubbs, who found Middleton to be a joy.

Middleton had a special moment with the new parents, who were still figuring out their child’s names. She reflected on the amount of pressure she felt trying to name her children – Prince George, 9, Princess Charlotte, 7, and Prince Louis, 4 – who she shares with Prince William.
Here’s more of what Stubbs had to say about Middleton’s visit:
“She was just delightful. She spent a lot of time talking to a lot of the staff and meeting mums and dadas and new babies across the whole service. It was really joyful for everyone to have that opportunity and hugely validating for us as a service for her to take the time out to visit us.”
Kate Middleton had a particular interest in maternal mental health and ensuring mothers and children were receiving proper care – mentally – throughout the pregnancy and into the postnatal period. “She particularly spent a lot of time talking to staff and families,” said Stubbs.
Kate Middleton Heckled on Thursday, Day After Hospital Visit
Just one day after her visit to the Royal Foundation Centre, Kate Middleton and her husband, Prince William, visited Northern Ireland – where they spoke with charity members of PIPS Suicide Prevention Ireland, as well as mentors and youths of Carrick Connect in Carrickfergus.
While the couple was greeting well-wishers outside the Carrickfergus Castle, Middleton was heckled by someone in the crowd. After shaking the Princess of Wales’ hand, the heckler stated, “Nice to meet you, but it would be better if it was when you were in your own country.”
Of course, Kate Middleton handled the situation perfectly – continuing to smile and turning her focus to all the other people waiting to shake her hand. As the video cuts out, you can hear the heckler adding, “Ireland belongs to the Irish.” It’s clear she’s a little salty over England.
The heckler got the entire interaction on video, which you can see below:
In addition to their trip to Carrickfergus and PIPS, Middleton and William were spotted behind the bar in a contest to see who can mix a cocktail the fastest at Trademarket. It was a lighthearted moment for the couple, who have kept themselves busy in recent weeks.
