Gabby Petito’s Mother Admits She Believes Brian Laundrie Lied in His Suicide Note

In her first interview since Brian Laundrie’s suicide note was revealed, Gabby Petito’s mother did not mince her words when asked what she thought of Laundrie’s admission of guilt. 

While talking with Today, Nicole Schmidt spoke about how she and her family are keeping Gabby’s memory alive. In an update, Schmidt revealed that the Gabby Petito Foundation, which they founded after Gabby was murdered by her fiancé Brian Laundrie in 2021, was able to donate $100,000 to the National Domestic Violence Hotline to help other victims in domestic abuse situations.

“Our story begins because of a domestic violence tragedy and we don’t want to see that happen to anybody else,” Schmidt shared. As Mamas Uncut previously reported, Gabby died in August 2021 while on a cross-country trip with Laundrie.

The couple was living in a modified van when Laundrie took Gabby’s life while they were in Utah. Her autopsy results revealed she died of manual strangulation.

After living Petito’s body in the woods, Laundrie returned home to his parents’ house before he claimed his own life in September 2021. Near his body was a notebook that held his suicide note where he admitted to taking Petito’s life.

Laundrie wrote that he thought he was being “merciful” when he claimed the life of the 22-year-old aspiring travel blogger. He also claimed that he took her life out of “shock” after she fell in a river and gravely injured herself.

“She had a small bump on her forehead that eventually got larger. Her feet hurt, her wrist hurt but she was freezing, shaking violently, while carrying her she continually made sounds of pain, laying next to her she said little lapsing between violent shakes, gasping in pain, begging for an end to her pain. …  I see now all the mistakes I made. I panicked. I was in shock.”

Gabby’s mom now says that his note “shows that was his character. Even in his last moments, he wanted to make sure he looked like the good guy, right? That’s ridiculous. We know how she died.”

Schmidt also revealed how she felt when she watch her daughter sitting in the back of a police vehicle following a domestic dispute that occurred between her and Brian before he killed her. “I want to jump through the screen and rescue my daughter,” Schmidt said. “She is hurting, she is scared.”

Schmidt says while she wasn’t aware her daughter was in an abusive relationship prior to her death, she doesn’t believe the domestic incident in Utah was the first her daughter endured. “In hindsight, looking at that? “No.”

But now, Schmidt is using their foundation to make sure her daughter did not die in vain. “She touched the world, right?” Schmidt said. “This whole tragedy that happened is for a higher purpose. That’s what keeps me going.”
